Should Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Be Made Into a Movie?
Eleven years have passed since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows brought the ultra-famous saga to an end on the big screen.
Many thought that Harry Potter 's story was officially done and dusted. But in an unexpected turn of events, fans were introduced to a new piece called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which can only be read as a book or seen as a play as of right now. However, that might change, as there have been talks about launching it as a film. But should it really be made into a movie?
Written by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a theater play derived from a story created as a collaboration by John Tiffany, Thorne, and none other than J. K. Rowling. The show's world premiere took place in London in 2016, and then it made its way to Broadway by 2018.
In the play, the story commences nineteen years after the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter book series. We now see Harry in his new role as the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic.
The plot is centered around Harry's son, who starts his education at Hogwarts and struggles with the pressure that comes with his father's legacy. And in addition to that, we're also introduced to a whole new generation of sorcerers.
Since the play proved to be very popular, talks about it becoming a movie came up. The director of the first two Harry Potter movies, Chris Columbus, has expressed he was keen on carrying on the franchise and spinning the play into a film adaptation, adding that he'd be thrilled to see the key trio come together once again. Rowling, on the other hand, hasn't shared the excitement in this regard.
However, there were rumors going around that Warner Bros had filed an application for a Cursed Child trademark, which would also involve a motion picture films license. And considering the fact that Rowling already owns a number of trademarks in relation to the play, many are speculating that they might have reached an understanding. Could this mean a sequel is possible? Sure. But whether it should be done or not, that's a whole other concern!
Although the award-winning play and the script book proved to be popular, Harry Potter fandom's response was polarizing. Some loved the play, while others didn't like the script, referring to it as poorly written fanfiction. What's more, we don't even know if the original cast members would be interested in reprising their roles.
Daniel Radcliffe, for instance, told the New York Times that he doesn't know what his answer would be in the future, but he has no interest in making a return just yet. And let's face it, the movie wouldn't be the same if the roles were recast.
At this moment in time, it doesn't look like the Cursed Child should be made into a movie. That said, a film adaptation could attract many fans who didn't get the chance to see the production live. And if the writers take the fans' criticism on board and make a few adjustments to the plot, the movie could have the potential to succeed.
