Recently, nepotism has become a big issue in the fashion industry, giving rise to the term "nepo baby".

Nepo babies are children of famous parents who seem to have benefited from the success of their family members while building their own careers. Like many cultural trends, this one couldn't stay confined to the fashion industry and took root in the entertainment industry as well.

In due course, accusations of nepotism did not escape the BBC's hit Sherlock. Amanda Abbington, who embodied the modern image of Mary Watson, was in a long-term relationship with Martin Freeman, who played John Watson, when Sherlock was filmed.

At first, the fact that Mary and John were a couple in real life and that their chemistry was genuine delighted fans, but then doubts began to creep in. That's when the accusations of Amanda Abbington being a so-called "nepo wife" started.

While the show was on the air, we didn't hear any comments from showrunners Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat or Amanda herself, but recently on the Full Disclosure podcast, the actress admitted that nepotism did take place.

"Because I was with Martin at the time, there was a lot of [accusations of] nepotism being banded about. It's true, it was that," Abbington said.

Some fans of BBC projects claim that the corporation is a place where nepotism flourishes, with no room for those who do not come from famous families. Viewers note that only people from wealthy families who have received private education get there, the percentage of which is less than ten percent in the UK, and at the BBC – an overwhelming number.

Despite the allegations, Amanda's character has become beloved by many fans who believe that Mary Watson was the highlight of the series until she was suddenly killed off.

Amanda received even more sympathy after she admitted that the connections really helped her get a role in the acclaimed series. It turns out that fans appreciate good acting, as well as sincerity and honesty, and it can even help get away with a lot, even being a "nepo wife".
