Sherlock S4 Most Heartbreaking Moment Finally Explained
Season 4 of BBC's Sherlock was filled with drama. Some would say, it was overflowing with drama, even; but there's one scene that particularly hurts to watch.
Everyone knows that Molly, the good doctor, has always been in love with Sherlock, but this feeling was never mutual. For Sherlock, she's always been either an associate (at best) or an annoyance (at worst).
This hurt the young woman tremendously, but she never gave up her painful hopes that one day, he'd see her for what she is — which would be the love of his life.
Even when she tried to let go of her feelings, she ended up finding a guy that looked exactly like Sherlock — remember Tom? His appearance turned out to be one of the funniest and saddest bits at the same time.
In season 4, while put through Eurus' trials, Sherlock is told by his sister to make a very specific phone call.
Eurus wanted him to call Molly and tell her that he loves her — and receive "I love you back", all while not explaining anything to her. Sherlock hated the very idea of it for its cruelty, but Molly's life was at stake, so he had to do it.
The entire phone call was one of the most excruciating scenes to watch in the entire show. In the end, Molly told him she loved him, and so she was saved… But have you not wondered what happened later, when Sherlock returned to London?
There are only two possible options: either they got together, or Sherlock had to do a very painful explanation upon his return.
According to showrunner Steven Moffat, the latter happened, and since we saw Molly came to 221B at the end of the episode with a smile on her face, there was no rift between them. But we're not sure we can take the producer's word on that.
Let's face the facts: the coffin that Eurus made for Molly had "I Love You" engraved on it.
There's no other person in the world as close to Molly as Sherlock since she literally had no one else, and in the scenario of her death, he was the only one who could've engraved it. Why did Eurus incorporate such a detail?
Eurus was admittedly the most genius person in the world, leaving Mycroft and Sherlock far behind and even surpassing Isaac Newton…
And she was obsessed with analyzing Sherlock's psyche. A superiorly intelligent person who predicted a terrorist attack by surfing a random Twitter feed for a few minutes could've definitely figured out the real feelings of her brother.
This entire test was created to make Sherlock finally ask himself what were his feelings for Molly, and to dig deep.
The engravement on the coffin clearly indicated that Eurus was certain he loved her; and the call was to make Sherlock hear himself say it out loud, hear Molly say it back, and face the truth he never knew existed.
After all this, if season 5 ever makes it to the screens, many fans are pretty convinced they'll see Sherlock and Molly get together, as there's been enough evidence that it makes sense now.
There's barely any other explanation to the Eurus' test — and we see that as a clear hint at what happens next.
