Sheldon Cooper Is the Best Written TBBT Character, but One Plot Hole Ruins It
His favorite spot makes no sense.
One of the best things about Sheldon Cooper, which makes him so beloved even though he was so annoying most of the time, is the consistency with which he was written. His character ended up being the most fleshed out of the group, keeping all of his quirks from the beginning of the show to the end.
However, from his upbringing in 90's Texas to his modern day obsessions and interests, there was one plot hole that made no sense at all for his character. Very particular about his place on the couch in his and Leonard's apartment, he never seemed to care about the place in the Caltech cafeteria.
Why Did Sheldon Love His Spot?
One of Sheldon Cooper's favorite things about his own home before moving in with Amy was his personal spot on the couch. According to the character himself, he preferred to sit there because it was perfectly warm in the winter, perfectly breezy in the summer, and gave him a great angle on the TV. And he did not want to share it with anyone else.
That attitude always ended at home, though, because he never said anything like that in any other place, including the frequently visited Caltech cafeteria.
While it would be understandable to any sane person, given that the cafeteria is a public place, and it would not be right to always occupy the same seat and threaten those who come near it, Sheldon never struck any viewer as a perfectly normal and sane guy. If anything, he was expected to be completely unconcerned with the comfort of others.
Given the structure of the cafeteria, he must have sat where he felt most comfortable. His perfect spot would probably be close to the food line, but not too close to avoid being crowded. He'd choose the perfect position in relation to the air conditioning, either to always feel its breeze or to avoid catching a cold from it.
Of course, there's no way to ensure that no one will take the seat before him, but given how picky Sheldon is about some things in his life, it wouldn't be surprising to see him wait his turn or skip lunch altogether just because he couldn't get his perfect spot.
Either way, the Caltech cafeteria was almost as iconic a location on the show as Sheldon and Leonard's living room. So if you want to take a trip back there, be sure to stream The Big Bang Theory on Max.
