Secret Invasion Director's Worst Fear is Tied to Tony Stark's Death (For a Reason)
One thing about Secret Invasion is not so secret at all: it was kind of a huge flop for the MCU.
Secret Invastion's director Ali Selim couldn't care less about the wave of negative reviews for his show — at least that's what he says. But some creative decisions, as he admitted to The Hollywood Reporter, make him actually fear for his life.
Maybe the most controversial twist of Secret Invasion was the revelation that Don Cheadle 's Rhodey was a Scrull all along. But what added fuel to the fire was Selim's confirmation that this was the case since Captain America: Civil War — if true, it changed a lot (and we mean a lot) in the MCU.
First of all, the real Rhodey apparently missed the entire Infinity Saga, which is already a huge deal if you think about it. But the most important thing about the Infinity Saga was the tragic demise of Tony Stark — Rhodey's best friend.
Because yes, if he's been a Scrull this entire time, then it seems that he wasn't there — neither at the time of Tony's sacrifice nor on his funeral. And Selim acknowledges just how mad it might make the fans.
"I'm worried that I will get death threats because of that and also because I'm the guy who took out Maria Hill. So I'm actually going into hiding now," he told The Hollywood Reporter.
Despite the huge emotional impact of the Rhodey revelation, it seems that both Don Cheadle and Kevin Feige are completely on board with the idea. For the Rhodey actor, the journey was "fun," while Feige believes making someone so unexpected into a Skrull was a shake-up that the MCU needed.
Did it really? Only future MCU projects — or rather, their performance with the viewers — can tell. So far, Marvel fans are not exactly thrilled about the way the cinematic universe is going, with many people rendering Phase Five dead on arrival.
