Secret Invasion’s director Ali Selim has something to say about the show’s finale that has raised a few eyebrows.

The MCU ’s first Phase Five series, Secret Invasion, has just aired its finale, leaving lots of fans with more questions than they had going in. The show’s ending is quite controversial (at best), and Selim has addressed the issue in some of his recent interviews.

In the finale, President Ritson starts a war with the Skrulls, and a group of vigilantes are seen killing everyone in their path (both the Skrulls and humans), making sure the viewers have an aftertaste of paranoia upon finishing the show.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the director makes it clear that he stands by the series’ ending, which he calls “great drama,” as opposed to the possibility of Ritson taking a more positive stance toward the Skrulls.

Selim believes that “Nick Fury has to have some opposition” at the end of Secret Invasion, which seems to be the driving factor behind that finale. He goes on to say that Fury has accepted that fact, but that doesn’t mean that everyone else has. The director reportedly wanted “an ending with some real guts to it,” so he chose to finish the series with the idea that the battle might not be over yet.

However, as you may recall, G’iah turns out to be one of the good guys after all, and she reconciles with Sonya. Selim considers this twist to be a vital one as the two characters leave the audience with a certain hope that everything can still be fixed and that “these strong, beautiful women” will be the ones to take on that difficult task.

Secret Invasion’s director has teased the show’s potential future in another interview with Screen Rant, where he claimed that President Ritson could have a villainous path going forward, or he could “learn a lesson and not be [a villain].”

Although, Selim stated that he wasn’t “so involved” in any of the future projects, so he couldn’t guarantee Ritson’s future appearances in the MCU.

We’ll have to wait until at least The Marvels, which is scheduled for release this fall, to find out if Dermot Mulroney’s Ritson pops up anywhere again.

Will Ritson be explored as a villain in the future?
