Justice for Stevie!

Stevie was one of the first people to have the dubious pleasure of welcoming the beleaguered Rose family to Schitt's Creek — a town they were forced to move to when they lost all their money.

As the hostess at the town's only motel, Stevie was never afraid of a sarcastic one-liner and never felt too overwhelmed by the Roses' wealth or the attitude of any particular family member. However, some fans feel that the later seasons of the CBC sitcom turned Stevie into a "loser" and completely ruined the character.

"What I liked about her in the first two seasons is that she seemed like an obviously smart girl who simply didn't care enough to aim for something bigger. She was confident and outgoing and smart. Then she turned into someone who was always self-deprecating, unpleasant, and underconfident," said Redditor WhateverYouDogsSay.

While some fans see this as Stevie's growth, others feel they were robbed of a potentially great character who was turned into a sidekick for no reason. For some, however, it was an example of good and unpredictable storytelling.

"She slowly became "unconfident" because her friends slowly pushed her out of her comfort zone (owning the motel, running it, Cabaret, heartbreak). People's growths are never linear. You can be strong and feisty as a teenager, depressed and lonely in your 20s, and thriving and happy in your 30s," argued Redditor Outside-Aspect2681.

Still, many fans would have preferred that Stevie stay the same sarcastic receptionist, even if it was nothing more than a facade she put up to protect herself. After all, someone has to be a decent opponent for David when he decides to act like a diva once again.

Schitt's Creek aired on CBC from 2015 to 2020, wrapping up after six seasons.
