You know the show is good when you spot the plot holes but willing to ignore them.

The very first seconds of Schitt's Creek immediately immerse the viewers into the harsh reality that the Rose family had to face in the beginning of their journey: the government taking away virtually all of their assets because of taxes. Alexis is struggling to fight for all the presents her ex-boyfriends gave her; John is trying to find out what can be done; Moira is in full hysteria mode; and David is, well, being David. All of this is happening as the authorities are taking away basically all of the riches the family had.

And this entire thing, fans believe now, is as far away from real life as it can possibly be — mainly because the government simply does not do that to people.

The events of Schitt's Creek are believed to be taking place in Canada. Many fans believe that Canadian authorities do not handle tax fraudsters like that, and the government simply does not arrive to someone's house and takes everything they have.

"Even if they had no idea and the government had just come in and told them, I have to imagine there'd be more rules in what was taken, you literally can't take everything, because even if their clothes and shoes were worth a lot of money, they need clothes and shoes, but Moira could keep all her wigs?" Redditor reptomcraddick said.

In the United States, the IRS does have an authority to seize assets, but even in the US, fans argue, the government would have issued a warning.

However, one fan did come up with an explanation that could resolve the debates. Perhaps, there was one person who knew everything about the government warnings, but chose to ignore them.

"The Roses left everything up to their accountant, who did know and didn't tell them because he was embezzling from them instead of paying their taxes," Redditor Blueporch explained.

No matter what happened to the Roses in the very beginning, fans are perfectly fine with how things went, even if it was a plot hole. After all, it's the Roses' journey from the entitled snobs to somewhat less entitled citizens we love Schitt's Creek for.

The show aired on CBС from January 2015 to April 2020, ending after six seasons.
