We all love the guy, but sometimes it's really hard to understand how town residents even put up with him.

Roland Schitt, the mayor of the town the Rose family had the pleasure to move to after they lost all their money, can be really bizarre at times... at all times, to be frank. Hardly an embodiment of politeness and gentleness, Roland can be rude and overly straightforward — sometimes to a point one might feel the urge to punch him in the face.

But all the dumb jokes and inappropriate remarks could have a special meaning, fans believe. For instance, there is an opinion that Roland is this annoying (especially with Johnny) simply because he is meant to bring him down to earth.

And the best part? In the moments that are really important, Roland is suddenly able to keep it together and cut the annoying stuff.

"Roland keeps up the appearance for the Roses in front of those snob friends from their past at the restaurant. While he loves giving Johnny a hard time in this scene he goes along with the facade that the Roses are trying to portray to Bev and Don. On consecutive rewatch it just strikes me as very kind of him," Redditor chrissesky13 said.

Still, Roland's persona could use being more pleasant, as many fans are still not okay with his demeanor. One Redditor offered their own theory on why that happened and how Chris Elliott, the actor who portrayed Roland, might have made his character a bit of an overkill.

"I think Chris Elliott felt it was a funny trait of Roland's, but his choices made him annoying and gross in a way I couldn't shake. The recurring bit where he coughed and mini choked when eating (and the one time he pretty much did choke with the fried chicken), just maintained that grossness," Redditor prettystandardreally suggested.

No matter how gross and annoying he is at times, Roland is an important part of Schitt's Creek who managed to turn his weird behavior into a charming little thing by the end of the show.

Schitt's Creek aired on CBC from 2015 to 2020, wrapping up after six seasons.
