No "gladiating" could fix that.

During the first seasons of Scandal, the romance between the series' main character Olivia Pope and US President Fitzgerald Grant was one of the show's biggest hooks. Enamored with the couple's "will they won't they", fans, however, quickly found themselves tired and bored as Olivia and Fitz became increasingly more toxic over the years.

Many people in the fandom now view the two as "ridiculously selfish and annoying", especially keen to blast Fitz as someone who "generally makes Olivia into a bad person and a weaker woman simply for his pleasure."

But maybe, the thing is that the romance simply did not age well?

"I think the script was going for "smart, logical woman overwhelmed with passion from deeply devoted man" but on screen, with the way the actors play it, it just reads as a skeevy dude and a wimp who keeps running back to the dude who bulldozes through her boundaries," Redditor gggggrrrrrrrrr said.

However, it's not only about the toxicity not passing the exam of the time. According to fans, Olivia and Fitz made their selfishness a matter of national security and constantly compromised everyone around them without bothering to provide any protection in return. Seriously, how many times did Fitz put the US in danger simply because he was angry with Olivia, or, on the contrary, because he was ready to sacrifice everything to save her?

Besides, the two could never had their "happily ever after" no matter how hard they tried and how many sacrifices they made.

"They were incompatible. They liked the idea of a fantasy they would never have, because Olivia would never be happy with a life like that. And the moment they officially got together, they were unhappy. It was all about the chase," Redditor daesgatling said.

Encompassing several years of tumultuous and thankfully fictional US politics, Shonda Rhimes' Scandal aired on ABC from 2012 to 2018, wrapping up after seven seasons.
