Guillermo del Toro has definitely proven himself to be an outstanding director over the years with his distinctive style of filmmaking, delivering a number of extremely memorable works ranging from horror to dark fantasy.

With that in mind, it's no surprise that the filmmaker has been obsessed with adapting the classics of gothic and horror literature, but unfortunately, del Toro hasn't had much luck in this area, with most of his projects never seeing the light of day.

The List Of Del Toro’s Canceled Projects Is Surprisingly Long

A movie based on H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness got stuck in development hell and was eventually scrapped, in part due to the director's determination to make it R-rated, while the adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde hasn't been heard of since around 2008.

But in recent years, the situation with del Toro's canceled projects has taken a turn for the better, as his Creature from the Black Lagoon remake eventually became 2017's The Shape of Water, and the filmmaker adapted several of Lovecraft's stories in 2022's Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities TV series.

In 2022, another of his passion projects, Frankenstein, which has been talked about since 2008, suddenly came out of obscurity when it was reported that Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Andrew Garfield were in negotiations to star in the film.

Now, a new update suggests that the project is one step closer to release, but not without a rather important change in the cast.

New Frankenstein Update Reveals More Of The Movie's Cast

According to Deadline, Andrew Garfield, who was originally considered to play Frankenstein's monster, has dropped out of the film because the delay in production due to the Hollywood strikes of 2023 caused a conflict in the actor's schedule.

It has been revealed that he will be replaced by Jacob Elordi, who recently starred as Felix Catton in 2023's black comedy thriller Saltburn, which was well received by critics and audiences alike.

In addition to the young actor, other notable stars such as Christoph Waltz and Lars Mikkelsen have also joined the cast, while Guillermo del Toro will write, direct and produce the film, which will be released on Netflix.

Fans are relieved to hear that the Hollywood strikes didn't bury the newly revived project and that it's still alive and well, saying that the decision to work with the streaming service has paid off handsomely for the filmmaker.

Both the aforementioned Cabinet of Curiosities and 2022's Pinocchio were released in collaboration with Netflix and received critical and fan acclaim, proving once again that when del Toro isn't constrained by his artistic vision, the results are beautiful.

In the past, the filmmaker has had serious problems with studios trying to change or control his projects, sometimes resulting in their cancellation or even the rejection of the ideas in the first place.

But considering that del Toro is once again in charge of most of the major aspects of Frankenstein, there's a good chance that it will be just as great as his latest works.
