Robert Pattinson’s Upcoming $150M Sci-fi Gets a Weird Release Date That Doesn’t Make Sense

Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo and others is, no doubt, one of the most anticipated films of the year — but something in its whole story doesn’t seem right.

After several significant delays the movie eventually landed January 31, 2025, as its premiere date, but the director’s recent revelations about the film’s production may raise some thoughts of whether there were indeed some issues on set.

Last week, according to World of Reel’s Jordan Ruimy, Bong Joon-ho and Curiosa’s director George Miller hosted an event together in Korea during which the former suddenly revealed that he had finished Mickey 17’s post-production back in November of 2023.

At this point it’s important to note that the brand new sci-fi movie was initially supposed to already be in the cinemas as Mickey 17’s first premiere date was planned for March 29.

The release was then abruptly moved to somewhere later this year and was even rumored to take place at the Cannes festival — eventually, Mickey 17 ended up leaving the list of 2024 premieres and was pushed to January 2025.

All this mess reaches even more drastic levels taking into account that the film was planned for a year earlier, January 2024, until Hollywood’s strikes in 2023 didn’t thwart Bong Joon-ho’s plans.

Though there’s no need for calling in question Bong Joon-ho’s words about his finished post-production process in November, it still doesn’t make any clearer why his movie currently has to wait for more than a whole year to be released if everything was perfect several months ago.

So far the only thing that may give a plausible explanation is the fact that Mickey 17 hasn’t had a lot of promotional material during all these months, except for one and only poster and a less-than-a-minute-long teaser — the latter, on top of that, was released a year ago.

Though nothing seems to give a very explicit sign of this, the reason for so many problematic issues with the release may be additional reshooting that occurred on set.
