Sometimes it’s just too hard to pick just 5 though.

We can't say that we live in a boring world today. And when we say boring, what we really mean is the one where nothing happens. Every day we hear about different incidents, both man-made and natural, that make us wonder what the future will bring. But we still secretly wish we would never find out.

However, when a show or movie gives us the chance to see what the world would be like if something extraordinary happened, we never miss the opportunity to take it in. That's why the dystopian genre is so popular – because it gives answers to questions that no one is allowed to ask out loud.

And here we have the list of the 5 best dystopian dramas as voted by Redditors.

1. Cloud Atlas (2012)

Cloud Atlas is a movie that makes your brain work like crazy and frankly it seems like that’s something not every viewer is ready to experience. The epic sci-fi film was written and directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer in 2012 and is based on a 2004 novel by David Mitchell.

The movie has a very complex plot and revolves around many different events that are all intertwined. It focuses on the idea that everything in the universe is connected, and that every step you take has a consequence that you may never know.

“One of the most ambitious movies in history and one of my favorites of all time. It's one where if you buy into it you'll love it but if you don't buy into the message you'll hate it. I love the intertwining story, the intertwining genres,” Redditor Rswany said.

2. Station Eleven (2021)

Station Eleven is a series that also serves the multiple timeline trick, but is actually a post-apocalyptic saga. At the center of the story are the few survivors of a devastating flu, who now face the terrible problem and rather responsible mission: to rebuild the world from scratch.

But as it appears almost immediately, it would not be an easy thing to do because humanity has already lost too much.

“Station Eleven was the most thought provoking show I have ever seen. I still can't explain why the prophet shook me to my core. The storylines were so well intertwined. I loved every character and the deliberateness of every interaction,” Redditor Firm-Ad-1827 said.

3. Children of Men (2006)

Alfonso Cuarón's legendary movie that really shakes you to the core. Created in 2006, it tells the events of the near future, 2027, depicting it as a time when the world is in chaos because of the infertility that has struck all the women of the world. Then one day in dystopian London, a miraculously pregnant woman is found by former activist Theo Faron.

Or rather, the young immigrant woman named Kee was brought to him by undeserving people who begged Theo to help them transport the woman to a sanctuary at sea. And now it is his duty to save her and the child in the hope of bringing children back to this world.

4. Gattaca (1997)

The events in this 1997 movie, written and directed by Andrew Niccol, are set in the near future once again, but the outcome of the new world is pretty different from whatever you can imagine. The world became a place where conceiving a child is now something like a scientific project.

All new humans are brought to life through genetic selection to ensure they have the best traits of their parents. But one man, Vincent Freeman, played by Ethan Hawke, was born the normal way, so he is considered an outcast and his lifelong dream of space travel never seems to come true. Or is there a loophole?

5. The Man in the High Castle (2015)

The story in this series has an alternate history twist and is set in a dystopian America ruled by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. The catastrophic outcome of World War II has brought nothing but chaos to the world, and now it's up to a young woman to find a way to overthrow the regime with the help of a mysterious film.
