Reddit Picked 10 Underrated Sitcoms That Deserve As Much Love As The Big Bang Theory
A little change never hurts.
The culture of non-stop TV series watching is easy to explain: it helps us forget our real-life problems and dive deep into the world of fantasy, where the only issue is someone's twisted love life or some other bizarre situation. However, over time, the trends changed to binge-watching only your favorite shows and ignoring other worthy series.
For example, everyone will list Friends and The Big Bang Theory as their favorite sitcoms, and you probably won't hear Just Shoot Me mentioned in the same sentence.
So Redditors decided to do some justice to these forgotten gems by naming ten most underrated sitcoms that are definitely worth watching.
1. Barney Miller
A rather old sitcom that can be described as a police drama. In the center of the show is Captain Barney Miller and the rest of the detectives who are dealing with the bad guys. The setting of the show is almost always the same place – the detectives' squad room where they interrogate different crime suspects during each episode. The show ran for 13 years on ABC and is now available on Amazon.
2. NewsRadio
NewsRadio has appeared many times in this Reddit thread, so we assume that the fandom of the show is quite large, but still not enough to make the show popular. The first season of the show was released in 1995. It is a workplace sitcom that you can easily binge watch instead of The Office. The series explores both the personal and professional lives of the employees of WNYX NewsRadio.
The sitcom is extremely funny as it mixes physical humor with satirical takes on famous events and people. Definitely a must-see for those who love smart, yet hilarious shows.
3. Raising Hope
The sitcom follows Jimmy Chance, a 23-year-old guy with a questionable lifestyle who becomes a father after his one-night stand gets pregnant by him and is sentenced to death after the baby is born. Who would have known that spending a night with a serial killer could lead to single parenthood, right? Well, now Jimmy and his quirky family will have to do whatever it takes to raise Hope to be a good girl.
4. The Bob Newhart Show
Redditors seemed to feel strongly about this show, which features the comedian as its main character. In the sitcom, he plays the role of a psychologist who generates laughs through his interactions with literally everyone else on the show. The way he handled his personal life as well as the tough job just made for a perfect situational comedy show. So fans of the actor and comedian, and those who miss The Big Bang Theory's extremely hilarious Professor Proton, should check it out.
5. 3rd Rock from the Sun
If you were looking for a fantasy show to watch, this sitcom is easily your perfect choice. The show follows four aliens who are sent to Earth as humans to experience and report on life on the third planet from the sun. The show's humor is largely based on the aliens' attempts to study and understand human civilization and to reflect on human life from an alien perspective. Which is very funny at times.
6. Rules of Engagement
The series is from Adam Sandler 's Happy Madison Productions in association with CBS Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Rules of Engagement follows two couples, one long married and one newly engaged. They also have a single friend, and together they try to deal with all the difficulties that their life situations bring. And while we sometimes feel sorry for them, most of the time we laugh at their attempts to hold it together.
7. Cougar Town
Cougar Town is a series that follows Jules Cobb, a woman in her 40's who recently got divorced and is now ready to fall into the pond of dating a real life once again. The fans of the show admired it for the cast and complicated and funny characters. In particular, it was Busy Phillips as Laurie who was the absolute star of the sitcom.
“I love this show so much. Never met anyone else in the wild who watches it - only some folks online. I think it’s gold - it has a great heart and tons of laughs,” Redditor ComphetMasala said.
8. Just Shoot Me
A workplace sitcom with a touch of luxury. The series is set in the office of a Vogue-like magazine called Blush and revolves around its many employees. For example, there's Maya, the daughter of the magazine's owner. She used to be a serious journalist, but kept getting fired because of her hot temper. So she is forced to work at her father's magazine. And that makes for a pretty fascinating story to follow.
9. Wings
An extremely hilarious ensemble cast show about two brothers trying to run a one-plane airline company somewhere off the beaten track. However, the job gets harder and harder as their weird and wacky friends keep getting in the way. There's also a slightly larger company at the same airport that keeps beating them in the game. The constant struggles the brothers go through are always fun to watch.
10. Happy Endings
If you want to watch a show about a dysfunctional group of six friends, this time try skipping Friends and tuning in to Happy Endings. The sitcom follows best friends, each with their own unique problems, as they try to hold on while life keeps knocking them down. It's easy to watch and very relatable, as the characters definitely share some similarities with typical modern day young adults.
