Quentin Tarantino's Most Underrated Movie You Still Haven’t Seen Is Easily His Best
Here comes a real crime fiction you should give a try!
Being recognized as the king of crime movies replete with violence, razor-sharp dialogues and allusions to pop culture entities, Quentin Tarantino inscribed his name in movie history. Almost all of his films are recognized both by critics and the audience.
However, there was a movie that became overshadowed by the success of Pulp Fiction (1994) and then by the Kill Bill saga (2003 - 2004). It appears to be the only movie of Tarantino that was adapted from a novel, Elmore Leonard’s one titled Rum Punch.
The film’s plot revolves around Jackie, a flight attendant, who is caught by the duo of an agent and a detective while she was heading to bring the money to her boss. The latter is in fact an arms dealer who is hunted by those two, and the woman is asked for help.
Instead of cooperating with them or going to prison, Jackie decides to take a completely different road: she runs away with the money together with her loving bondsman.
This movie has it all: Tarantino’s witty dialogues, spectacular action-packed sequences and homages paid to the good old cinema, especially to blaxploitation films of the 1970s, the genre that mostly explored the topic of the civil rights of African American people.
Even though it touches upon these socially important issues, it doesn’t delve into a boring exploitation story and doesn’t forget about the filmmaker’s trademark humor. Fans of Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Django Unchained (2012) will be in complete awe of it.
The cast here assembles such acclaimed actors, as Michael Keaton, Robert De Niro, Robert Forster and Bridget Fonda, as well as the star of blaxploitation films, Pam Grier, as the movie’s lead, who portrayed the brave, yet cunning female con artist.
Titled Jackie Brown after the main heroine, disappointingly, it’s the least known film ever made by Quentin Tarantino. It deserves much more hype, and it’s proved by its decent score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and numerous positive fans’ reviews.
“His [Tarantino’s] best movie. Outstanding acting and a fun and interesting story,” concludes Redditor @HeDogged.
Check out this overlooked crime gem, as Jackie Brown is available for watching on Netflix and Prime.
