And it's a real treat for fans and newcomers alike.

Transformers One finally got its digital release – it is the first animated film in the franchise in 38 years. Since the end of Michael Bay's pentalogy, there have been two attempts to revive the robots.

In 2018, Bumblebee reached the big screens – a cute coming-of-age story that became a soft reboot of the film saga. In 2023, the steel giants returned in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts – the most problematic chapter in the series. And this fall, a new surprise was prepared for fans – an animated film about the relationship between Optimus Prime and Megatron.

What Is Transformers One About?

The inhabitants of the underground metropolis of Iacon are divided into two social classes: those who have transformation gears and those who do not. The former live in luxury, while the latter are forced to toil in the mines.

Fifty cycles ago, representatives of the evil race of Transformers, resembling metal mollusks, attacked Cybertron. During the fierce war, the Matrix of Leadership was lost – a sphere containing a blob of energy that sustains life on the planet. Or so says the leader of Iacon, Sentinel Prime.

While he searches for the Matrix, ordinary robots must work in the mines, extracting Energon – the main fuel of the Transformer race. Among the thousands of miner bots work two best friends, Orion Pax and D-16, who later become the worst enemies, Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Transformers One Was Made by Experienced Cinematographers

The animated Transformers movie is directed by Josh Cooley, the writer of Inside Out and director of Toy Story 4. Cooley had to tell new stories about familiar childhood characters before, so telling the story of Optimus and Megatron friendship turning into ideological enmity was not difficult for him.

Pax is a young adventurer who believes he was made for something more than grueling physical labor in the mines. D-16 is a calm and calculating young man who strictly follows established protocols and constantly bails his friend out of trouble.

So far, they are not even close to the Prime and Megatron we have seen in Michael Bay's films. The transformation has yet to take place. Hoping that the mythical artifact will help solve the problems of resource scarcity and social inequality that flourish in Iacon, Pax and D-16, with the help of B-127 and Elita-1, set out to find the Matrix of Leadership.

Transformers One Is the Perfect Coming-of-Age Story for Fans and Newcomers

Transformers One is a real treat for fans of the franchise and a charming coming-of-age story. The characters experience strange metamorphoses with their own mechanical bodies, trying to transform for the first time – robots have puberty too.

Transformers One will be a fascinating spectacle for those new to the franchise as well as its most devoted fans. Cooley treats the franchise's cult legacy with trepidation, so his film references both the old animation and Bay's films.

But fan service is no substitute for drama, only a wink to the attentive viewer. It is even surprising that the animated prequel became the most mature story of the entire series.
