New fake death movie is gaining much hype these days.

Summary:

  • Netflix ’s new successful thriller centers on a man, pretending to be dead for 15 years and then deciding to acknowledge his family’s fate without him.
  • It combines suspense, great acting and non-traditional setting.

Fake deaths have always been one of the most tempting movie themes used by filmmakers to add another level of suspense and inner conflict to the story.

This trope was successfully exploited in the 1991 psychological thriller Sleeping with the Enemy, starring Julia Roberts. There she portrayed a woman, pretending to be dead after an accident to escape the abuse of her overprotective obsessive husband.

Nowadays the movie with a seemingly similar plot blows up Netflix’s top. It follows the story of a man, cornered by debt, who decides to fake his own death to assure his own family would be safe and not suffer from his financial obligations. After 15 years of pretending to die in a bomb explosion, he returns to learn of his family's life.

The film explores the ways in which fate may lead you during the course of time, and which consequences are waiting for you as a result of the bold and unfair decisions. In his attempt to avoid punishment the movie’s protagonist faces the unexpected life turn, leaving him with much bigger trouble than he had before his disappearance.

The movie, set in the heat of Argentina, offers you the same heat of family tragedy, inner crisis and confrontation with the demons of the past in the face of unsolved problems. It stars such Argentine actors, as Joaquín Furriel, Griselda Siciliani and Gabriel Goity, who deliver convincing performances, which add to the specularity of the film’s drama.

Chart-Climber Under Fire

However, the movie is now receiving criticism regarding the fact that some aspects remain unexplained which creates the severe holes in the plot.

For example, we never gonna learn why Sergio, the main character, got into his debts, and why he really decided to return to his family in that particular moment of his new fake life.

Still, it appears to be a well-acted thriller filled with a strong Latin American vibe, which is definitely worth watching. Stream Rest in Peace now on Netflix.
