If you are starving for the new crime shows starring powerful women, like Kate Winslet ’s Mare of Easttown, exploring both the mysterious murder and the heroine’s inner crises at the same time, here is some good news for you.
Hulu just dropped a trailer for the platform’s new original true crime series, titled Under the Bridge.
Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 book of the same name, the show returns to the 1997 true murder, which happened in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada. The story revolves around a 14-year old girl, Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), once went to a friends' party near the bridge and never returned home. Later, she was found there beaten to death.
The show, following the investigation of the underworld of the teenagers accused of Reena’s murder and the extremely unexpected ways where it may lead and who the unlikely killer really was, stars the accomplished Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone.
The former actress, famous for her leading role in the series Daisy Jones & the Six (2023), is playing the book author, Godfrey. She’s struggling to report on the murder and to manage her own life. Gladstone, being an Oscar-nominated performer, portrayed a fictional police officer, Cam Bentland, who is thoroughly investigating the case.
The impression of Under the Bridge was teasingly described by its showrunner, Samir Mehta, in his recent interview regarding the upcoming release.
“Our shorthand in the room was that the show is Eighth Grade meets The Sopranos, ” says Mehta, hinting at the involvement of the topic of teenage gangs and growing in the criminal atmosphere.
The Internet is buzzing with anticipation of the series with the release of the trailer, pointing at the aspects of Under the Bridge, distinguishing it from other crime series. Given that the show worked directly with Reena’s family to make their story closer to the truth and more faithful to the deceased girl, it got lots of admiration from Redditors.
“So many of these stories based on real life tragedies can go into an exploitative direction when victims or their families are ignored,” admits @Traditional_Maybe_80.
Hoping it’ll add to the series’ better narration, let’s wait for Under the Bridge, which is scheduled to premiere with two episodes April 17, with new episodes launching weekly.
