Pedro Pascal Could Be in Vampire Diaries, But Here's Why We're Glad He Wasn't

The Vampire Diaries was based on a series of teen novels and aired for eight seasons on the CW. From 2009 to 2017, the network aired over 170 episodes.

The show became an international hit and also received a sequel in the form of two spin-offs – The Originals and Legacies.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Julie Plec, producer and writer, talked about working on The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off.

Filming of The Originals began after the release of the fourth season of the original show, and Pedro Pascal auditioned for one of the roles.

The actor is now known for his participation in Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian, but he failed to embody the image of Marcel Gerard:

"One of the other people who read […] for that part was Pedro Pascal, who I loved. I was obsessed with him, but he was just on the older side."

The show follows three Original vampires: Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah, who move to New Orleans. Klaus is determined to replace his former protégé Marcel, who now runs New Orleans, and reclaim the city that once belonged to him.

They also meet their long-lost older sister, Freya, who was thought to be dead for a thousand years. She joins the Ancient family and helps them fight their enemies.

Had things gone differently, Pascal might have missed out on the role of Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones as the two series were filmed almost simultaneously.

Pascal's career turned out to be extremely successful, with not only Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian to his credit, but also the popular TV series Narcos and the screen adaptation of The Last of Us.

In April, Time magazine included Pedro Pascal in its list of the 100 most influential people.

The actor, who spent more than the first decade of his career in cameo roles, has become the star of blockbuster series on HBO and Disney Plus.
