Peaky Blinders Creator Teases ‘an Explosive Chapter’ for Show’s Universe Expansion
Cillian Murphy has no time for rest once again.
After originally ending back in 2022, a historical drama show Peaky Blinders is suddenly getting a revival, this time with Netflix at its helm. The streaming giant is now officially set to produce a separate movie that will continue the original show’s storyline with Cillian Murphy reprising his leading role as Thomas Shelby.
According to Variety reports, the future film will get Tom Harper as its director, with Harper having previously helmed several episodes for Peaky Blinders’ first season. Upon Netflix’s announcement about the movie’s production, Harper revealed that the entire crew of the original show had no clue that it would eventually turn into something so culturally important.
The director also noted that the series owes its immense success to “the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive. ‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family — and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
No details about the upcoming film’s storyline have been revealed yet, though Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight previously stated that, should the series get a new installment, its plot would most likely unfold during World War I.
This actually makes a lot of sense for the film given that the original show’s storyline stops sometime in the 1910s and, while commenting on Netflix’s brand new project, Knight hinted at the same timeline stressing that “it will be an explosive chapter in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ story. No holds barred. Full on ‘Peaky Blinders’ at war.”
Apart from the show’s star Cillian Murphy, the rest of the cast remains a mystery, but we’re still likely to receive more updates anytime soon as the movie production is set to start already this year.
Netflix gave no details about the flick’s potential release date, though there are reasons to believe that it will be dropped on the streaming platform sometime in 2025.
