Peacemaker Season 2 Gets A Long Overdue Update From James Gunn
The filmmaker confirmed that work on the script is in full swing, suggesting that season 2 is getting closer to release.
Summary:
- Unlike many other recent DCU projects, the Peacemaker TV series has been a huge success with both critics and fans
- However, with James Gunn busy rebooting the DCU, very little is known about season 2 of the show
- Recently, the filmmaker confirmed that work on the script for season 2 is in full swing, giving hope to fans
While the DCU has suffered one flop after another on the big screen in recent years, the franchise's only (for now) television outing has been a welcome exception.
The Peacemaker TV series, starring John Cena reprising the role he first portrayed in 2021's The Suicide Squad as the titular anti-hero, was a huge success and a breath of fresh air for many fans who had lost hope in the DCU as a whole.
Peacemaker Season 1 Was One of the Greatest Shows in Recent years
The debut season of the show was released in early 2022 and picked up right after The Suicide Squad, with Christopher Smith (the character's real name) immediately sent on another dangerous mission to save the planet, no less.
The story revolved around a sentient alien species, nicknamed Butterflies because of their appearance, who have taken over human bodies in an elaborate plan to conquer Earth.
With a bizarre setup, hilarious jokes, gory action, nice twists, and incredibly well-acted characters (especially Peacemaker himself, as John Cena proved once again that he is actually quite talented as an actor in addition to being a wrestler), the show eventually captured the hearts of countless fans and left them wanting more.
Unfortunately, with the show's creator, James Gunn, now in charge of overhauling the entire DCU, and then the infamous Hollywood strikes, it was unclear when to expect the show's already confirmed second season.
The only thing that was known was that it wouldn't be released before the first chapter of the rebooted DCU, Superman: Legacy, sees the light of day, as Peacemaker Season 2 will take place in the new continuity of the franchise.
Now, finally, a fresh update from the filmmaker himself suggests that the highly anticipated second season may not be too far away.
James Gunn Spent Thanksgiving Working On Peacemaker Season 2 Script
In response to a fan's question on Threads about whether Gunn enjoyed this Thanksgiving, he mentioned that in addition to going out to dinner with his wife, Jennifer Holland (who portrays Agent Emilia Harcourt in the series), he also spent the holiday writing the script for season 2.
Although the filmmaker didn't mention how much work is left to complete the story for the season, it's clear that the process is in full swing and may be finished soon.
Fans are happy to hear this promising update, because considering that the first season ended almost two years ago, it's about time that at least the script for the second season is finally written.
They're hoping that it won't disappoint, at least by being on par with its hugely successful predecessor and featuring all the characters that fans grew to love during the show's debut season.
Some fans are also wondering if the first season of the series will remain canon, or if the second season will be a sort of soft reboot for the character, since Gunn has already confirmed that it will take place in the new timeline.
Either way, they will have to wait quite some time because, as mentioned above, Peacemaker will come out after the release of Superman: Legacy, which is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
