This series is out there making a killing, and you likely haven’t even heard of it.

Whenever someone brings up the topic of “the greatest TV shows of all time,” our mind immediately wanders to Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, The Walking Dead … You get the point. These are all American TV shows with big budgets and recognizable actors — but what we often fail to recognize is brilliance from across the ocean. There are some amazing gems there we never even touch!

Take this 2017 mystery thriller series, for instance. It has a near-perfect Tomatometer score; a near-perfect IMDb score (which is even more impressive), and is dubbed one of the greatest TV shows ever by fans — and yet, we only learn about it now.

Do You See the Light in the Dark?

In 2017, Dark became the first Netflix original series from Germany. This gripping mystery thriller takes its viewers on a disturbing journey to a small German town where two kids went missing, and the search for them leads four families to uncover each other’s and their own darkest secrets as well as their connection to the locale.

“Everything is connected,” Dark’s poster promises — and it delivers masterfully on this promise. The show gradually unravels a complex and intricate web of relationships, crimes, and mysteries that have been holding the small community together, plunging its people into darkness the more they look into their past.

Dark Is a Criminally Overlooked Gem

Critically, Dark was a massive success. In a unique twist, this German show only picked up the pace after the first season’s great performance, leading to a perfect Tomatometer score and an average of 95% Critic Score (with 100% from Top Critics) across its three seasons. What’s even more impressive, IMDb tells a very similar story: on that far stricter platform, Dark holds a sensational 8.7/10 score.

If you’re a fan of twisted crimes, depressing settings, and convoluted stories, Dark is the show for you — and even if you’re not, this series will turn you into one. The TV show consists of only three seasons, not dragging out the plot any longer than needed, so it won’t take much of your time but will bring you cinephilic satisfaction.

You can watch Dark on Netflix and Apple TV.
