Season 2 already looks more promising.

Summary:

  • Released by Prime Video, Outer Range is a TV series that mixes western and sci-fi genres.
  • Starring Josh Brolin and Imogen Poots, the series is set to premiere its second season in May 2024.
  • According to Brolin, the show has gained a new showrunner and improved the quality of storytelling.

Now that Yellowstone is coming to an end, many viewers are looking for more western TV shows to fill the void in their hearts. Unfortunately, that task isn't as easy as one might think, as there aren't many stories as compelling and exciting as Yellowstone has been all these years.

However, Prime Video's contender, Outer Range, which was released back in 2022 and is now about to return with its second season, is the closest you can find. It has the same western setting, a strong emphasis on family values and legacy, and a big sci-fi twist to make things fun.

And if you weren't too impressed with season 1, season 2 may be much more up your alley. According to one of the stars, Josh Brolin, the team has changed and so has the way they tell the story.

Outer Range Season 2 Showrunner Change

One of the biggest changes in the show will remain unseen by viewers because it happened behind the cameras. However, the results, if successful, should be seen in the very first episodes of the new season. With the change of a showrunner, the entire approach to storytelling by the team behind the show has changed.

While Josh Brolin, who plays family patriarch Royal Abbott, doesn't blame previous showrunner Brian Watkins for the lack of experience on set, admitting that the role was too much to handle, he's not afraid to voice his frustrations.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the actor admitted that he didn't like not having a say in the direction of the show. Not only did the cast not have a say, but at times they couldn't even figure out where season 1 was going, and that left a lot of people feeling anxious:

“It makes perfect sense to me why we were meandering at times. <...> We had some people involved that were like, ‘You need to just trust’…and I was like, Yeah, bullsh*t. We need to know. We’re the storytellers and we create the mystery,” the actor shared.

Now that Outer Range has a new showrunner and executive producer in Charles Murray, things are likely to change for the better, not only for the behind-the-scenes team, but for the viewers as well. If those telling the story have some certainty about how it should go, chances are it will be more consistent.

If you're interested in checking out Outer Range, you still have time to watch season 1 before season 2 drops. Tune in to Prime Video for the season two premiere on May 16, 2024, and buckle up for another Wild West adventure with a mysterious twist.
