But even back in the day, Pattinson and Stewart were not the author’s first picks; today, they’re not the director’s first picks, either.

Who Was on Stephenie Meyer’s Dream Twilight Cast?

Stephenie Meyer, the author of the original Twilight books, had her own opinion on the future lead actors when she wrote the series. Even before the first adaptation offer, she always envisioned — you won’t believe it — Emily Browning (A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Henry Cavill ( The Witcher ). Meyer wanted them to be cast.

However, it was not her call to make: when the live-action adaptation came around, Browning rejected the offer, and Cavill was lowkey too old for the part. Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the first Twilight movie, picked Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in their stead, and this choice proved to be iconic over time.

But today, director Hardwicke believes she would select different actors.

Recently, the original Twilight director joined Josh Horowitz on the Watchalong podcast and discussed, among other things, her fan-favorite movie. Hardwicke revealed that she had considered who she would have picked for the parts of Bella and Edward today, and we have to admit, she had some curious choices.

“Have you seen Saltburn yet? Yeah, Jacob Elordi. I mean, he's amazing, he probably would be Edward today. <...> You just mentioned Jenna Ortega, she's amazing,” the director told the host.

With Jenna Ortega’s breakthrough role as Wednesday in her titular Netflix show, seeing her as a new Bella is almost self-evident; and Jacob Elordi, who recently jump-started his career with Saltburn, looks like the perfect young vampire type. Twilight fans, on the other hand, don’t seem to share Hardwicke’s opinion.

What Do Fans Think About Hardwicke’s New Twilight Idea?

Twilight fans didn’t take the news lightly. Some of them hate the original director’s new dream cast; others admit that while they could see it work, they hate the idea of someone else playing their favorite characters. Some even point out that actors themselves would have likely refused to play the parts for various reasons.

“Jenna maybe. I doubt [Jacob,] the guy who criticized The Kissing Booth, will star in anything like that again,” X (formerly Twitter) user ianmakesfilms pointed out.

But the most amusing comments undeniably came from the people who took Hardwicke’s words for an official Twilight reboot announcement.

The comment section exploded with numerous “We don’t need a reboot!” exclamations, and some people even took this very misguided chance to prove their intelligence.

“Twilight remake? This is proof that new movies/shows will just never be good like the good ole days. In my opinion, actors actually put emotion/effort into acting back then,” stated SoCruelTV.

Alas, there was no actual reboot to talk so arrogantly about; director Hardwicke only expressed her thoughts on who of the new actor generation would be her personal top pick for the parts. All the while, the Twilight TV show is still in development, and fans are shivering and quivering thinking about how terrible or fantastic it will be.
