1. Pluto
This Japanese manga sci-fi series has everything. Political commentary, murder, mystery, intrigue, fascinating characters, and a story that just does not weaken. The main character, Gesicht, is a robot detective investigating a series of robot and human murders. The killer seems to be targeting the world’s most powerful robots, and humans that advocate for robots having equal rights.
2. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Japan scores again with this amazing adaptation of CD Projekt Red’s iconic game, Cyberpunk. Set in a dystopian future, the main character David works as an edgerunner, a black-market mercenary, after losing all he has. We immediately sympathize with him and enjoy following his journey as we meet other edgerunners. Danger is never far away, which makes this a thrilling peek into a frightening future.
3. Travelers
Travelers presents a time travel premise that is instantly addictive. In the distant future, people known as Travelers are required to transport their consciousness back in time into the body of a person who is about to die but must not. You see, their primary job is to protect the timeline and prevent total disaster for humanity. Expect action, adventure, plot twists, and plenty of laughs.
4. Katla
This Icelandic mystery sci-fi series focuses on a volcano, called Katla. A year after its last eruption, many people refuse to move away from the nearby town despite breathing ash-filled air. Rumors persist of strange creatures, called changelings. Then one day, a woman appears, covered in ash, and locals soon realize she disappeared twenty years earlier and has not aged a day. As more ash-covered, long-lost people start to emerge, the questions about changelings only become more urgent.
5. Osmosis
Osmosis is a French sci-fi thriller and drama that presents a wonderful cautionary tale about the use of dating apps. Consider the horrifying prospect of giving an AI all your deepest and most personal information to locate your ideal partner. Your hopes, dreams, fears, memories, all the things that make you who you are, in the hands of machines. Truly the stuff nightmares are made of.
6. The Hollow
This animated Canadian adventure has such a deep element of strangeness to it that you cannot help but keep watching. Three teenagers awaken with no memories, and find themselves in a massive forest with seemingly only one ally, that they call Weirdie or The Weird Guy. Each time they ask him for help, he teleports them somewhere else. As they face danger at every turn, they keep wondering if they will ever make it out alive.
7. Mystery Science Theatre 3000: The Return
If you enjoy some laughs with your sci-fi, this is the show for you. Felicia Day stars in this delightful sequel to the original, in which she continues her father and grandmother’s quirky experiments, testing B movies on a new subject. Hilarious and an awesome trip down movie memory lane for B movie fans.
