Relatable characters that you can really sympathize with, believable situations, and impressive fight scenes are the cornerstones of any great action show.

1. Song of the Bandits

This historical K-drama takes us back to the 1920s. It was a time when Japan occupied Korea and disbanded its police and military after the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905. Many Koreans fled to China, a region known as Gando, to escape Japanese rule. Some attempted to rebuild their lives there, while others sought to form outlaw armies to fight for Korea's independence.

Focusing on a Japanese soldier who travels to Gando to support the Koreans, this is a story not only of battles and action, but of survival, hope, and refusal to give up. The characters are inspiring and absolutely wonderful to watch. Be prepared for some heartbreak, as those familiar with their history will no doubt expect.

2. The Longest Night

This one could loosely be considered a Christmas movie, depending on your definition as most of it takes place during Christmas Eve. But this Spanish thriller is hardly festive. A notorious serial killer, Simón Lago, is finally captured and sent to a psychiatric prison. The warden, while pleased this man is off the streets, does not appreciate his Christmas Eve plans being disrupted. Little does he know that will become the least of his worries as a plot is being formed to break Simón out. And this is going to turn out to be the longest night of his life.

3. D.P.

Another brilliant K-drama, this time focusing on the military police. The show paints a dark picture of the Korean military, depicting it as being filled with bullying, cruelty, and a terrifying pecking order of sorts based on physical strength. Those deemed strong and worthy are treated well. While those who are not, are subject to horrific abuse from their fellow soldiers.

D.P. itself is an acronym for Deserter Pursuit, a team of military police who are tasked with catching deserters. Action and adventure are rife throughout this series, the whole time being underwritten by the scathing critique of the Korean military.

4. Spotless

This French series is a lot of things, not just an action. It is also a dark comedy, thriller, mystery, and brilliantly constructed story with amazingly complex characters. Jean is a happy family man, enjoying his life, until his estranged brother, Martin, reappears. Tragedy has kept them apart for more than 15 years, and Jean has gotten comfortable managing a crime scene cleaning business and living with wife and two children. But his brother changes everything when he shows up with the dead body of a woman, needing Jean’s help. And the stakes grow even higher when a ruthless mob boss blackmails them into working for him.

The more we watch, the more we learn about Martin, Jean, and their family’s dark past. Will Jean and Martin survive? Will Jean’s wife and children be safe? This one will have you on the edge of your seat and guessing until the very end.
