Hermione Granger is the most brilliant witch of her generation. She is also one of the most closed-minded people in the Harry Potter saga.

Hermione is a Muggle-born who learns about the magic world at the age of 11 and… instantly believes that she is a witch. That girl certainly doesn’t have any trust issues, and we are jealous.

When Hermione arrives at Hogwarts, she studies magic, sees all kinds of creatures (dragons, house elves, ghosts), learns that Harry is a Parselmouth (and never questions it, even though it is an extremely rare ability), and uses time travel on a day-to-day basis.

Yet, she can’t believe that Professor Trelawney sees the future. What’s up with that?

Divination is a controversial discipline, and the magical world treats it with a dash of suspicion (to say the least). We would understand if Malfoy or any other Pureblood wizard had doubted Trelawney’s abilities as a Seer – they were conditioned to believe that Divination is a scam.

Hermione comes from a different background and is forced to take lots of things at face value very quickly, so why does predicting the future seem so far-fetched to her?

It’s actually pretty simple. Hermione doesn’t like to acknowledge that she is bad at something, which is why it’s much easier for her to pretend that something doesn’t exist or isn’t true than to admit that it is beyond her abilities.

We stan an anxious perfectionist, but Hermione doesn’t have the gift of a Seer, and she can’t study something that she can’t excel at. Besides, Trelawney did hurt her feelings pretty harshly, and that only added insult to injury.

Trelawney may be a fraud 90% of the time, but Hermione is still a judgmental bigot toward an entire magical discipline. That’s not even the only time she has pulled something like this.

Remember how skeptical Hermione is at first about the Deathly Hallows story? About Luna Lovegood’s worldview? She is far from perfect, that’s for sure.

Luckily, Hermione has grown a lot over the course of the Harry Potter saga. She ends up being a lot more open-minded than started out, and we have certain life-threatening events to thank for that. Sort of.
