One Thing That Made Never Have I Ever Fans Hate Devi (But Love The Show)
It's good to have at least one controversial character on the show. Keeps things interesting!
Never Have I Ever is not your classic teen dramatic comedy. Mindy Kaling decided to create something more than that here, mixing the usual teenage girl tropes with South Asian stereotypes in an attempt to show the world the inside of Indian teenage life.
The show debuted in 2020 and became a real Netflix hit. The main characters of the show are a group of school kids in Sherman Oaks. The lead role in the show belongs to Devi Vishwakumar, a teenager who struggles on many fronts.
The show opens with Devi praying to the Indian gods for a really hot boyfriend and all the other perks a teenage girl should have in high school. But there is one thing that makes her life a lot more complicated.
The thing is, her father, whom she loved very much, died right in front of her while she was performing in a school orchestra concert. After such a shock, her legs were paralyzed for several months. Adding much more trouble to an already complicated teenage life...
With all these things going on in her life (and adding to that her really hot-tempered nature in general), it was no wonder that she became a total nightmare. Throughout the show, she was actually self-sabotaging her life, never letting go of anything and making a series of really bad decisions.
Although it seems like fans actually enjoyed her as a character.
“Devi being an absolute toxic MESS is exactly what made this show great. I've seen so much Devi hate (to which I completely understand, we all wanted to shake the sh*t out of her for being such a toxic and drama seeking disaster) but her being exactly the mess she is makes this one of the most entertaining shows I've watched in a long time,” Redditor xtinejoi said.
The main reason they felt that way was that her feelings were actually very relatable. She behaved in the way many people want, but for some reasons can't.
Devi actually exaggerated every emotion she had during the series, and that just added so much flavor to the show and made it totally different from other teen dramas.
But the best part is that even after her outbursts, she still managed to find a way to deal with everything she had caused.
