An old friend turning back to help out is not what fans want to see this season.

All Ted Lasso viewers seem to agree that the show is light-hearted and upbeat.

Throughout the three seasons, people have enjoyed watching Ted overcome hardships with hilarious jokes and a big smile on his face.

However, even the most wholesome show needs to spice things up and throw a villain into the mix every now and then. Nate Shelley, played by Nick Mohammed, was a perfect fit for this story.

Fans thought of Nate as a terrible person almost immediately, judging by his short temper and constant attempts to bring down everyone around him.

Those who gave him the benefit of the doubt were later disappointed when Nate betrayed AFC Richmond.

Since then, the man's name has become almost taboo in fan discussions, except when someone discovers a new reason to hate him.

Those feelings may not last much longer. Some Ted Lasso viewers suspect that the changing dynamic of the show will bring not only a breaking point for Ted himself, but also an unexpected redemption arc for his ex-friend.

Fans fear that Nate might actually find some decency in himself to come around and lift Ted up among all the other people he has surrounded himself with. Needless to say, not everyone is looking forward to such a happy ending.

"I'm fine with Nate getting a redemption arc, but in no way should he be written back into the main narrative, as Richmond staff or everybody's buddy," Redditor Catch-a-RIIIDE said, explaining their concerns about the possible ending.

It's understandable that after all the horrible things he's said and done, no one is willing to put Nate in their "good" books.

Once the trust of the fanbase is lost, it's almost impossible to regain it completely.

Especially considering the fact that there isn't much time left: season 3 is likely to be the final season of the show, and there are fewer and fewer episodes left with each passing week.

If you want to see where Nate and Ted's story goes, and whether the memories of their former friendship will prevail, tune in to Apple TV Plus every Wednesday for new episodes of Ted Lasso.
