One of the most desired fancasts may come true, as confirmed by the actress and the showrunner themselves.

Summary

  • With the Hollywood strikes over, the production of One Piece Season 2 could start soon.
  • The possible approach of the new season has fans excited to see their favorite character played by the legendary actress.
  • Not only is she a longtime One Piece fan, but she's also the perfect choice for the role.

The live-action series One Piece was an instant hit on Netflix, earning accolades for its writing, directing, pacing, editing, special effects and, of course, acting — critics and viewers alike were unanimous in their praise. The series produced under the auspices of the streaming service turned out to be arguably the best live-action adaptation per se.

The immense popularity of One Piece led Netflix to announce the second season two weeks after the release of the first one. At the time of the announcement, the script for the second season was mostly finished, just waiting for the end of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Now, the writers and actors have managed to sign a tentative agreement with the AMPTP, and work on the new season seems to be in full swing. This gives fans even more reason to be excited, especially since it's highly expected that one of the manga's most prominent characters, Dr. Kureha, will be played by a legendary Hollywood actress!

Who is Dr. Kureha from One Piece?

Given the pacing of Season 1, it's likely that the so-called Drum Island arc will be touched upon at one point or another in Season 2. In the arc, Nami becomes seriously ill and the crew of the Straw Hat Pirates must go in search of a doctor. Along the way, they find a new ally in Tony Tony Chopper, a reindeer who will serve as a doctor on Going Merry and also help the islanders free themselves from the tyranny of King Wapol.

There they meet Chopper's mentor, Dr. Kureha. She is the one who saves Nami from death and leads Luffy's team. Dr. Kureha has a strong sense of justice, but she is sometimes reluctant to help the Straw Hat Pirates. However, she is the one who motivates Chopper to join their team.

Actress and Showrunner-Approved Fancast

Even before the series was released, while it was still in production, fans of one of the world's most popular pirate franchises were speculating and, of course, fancasting. Many were particularly eager to see the magnificent Jamie Lee Curtis in the live-action adaptation.

Yes, it was Curtis who fans thought would be perfect as Dr. Kureha, and their pleas were answered! In September, in the midst of Hollywood's double strike, the actress took to her personal Instagram account to express her desire to play this particular role, even joking that she would lobby for her participation in One Piece Season 2.

What's more, the show's showrunner, Matt Owens, responded almost immediately in the comments. 'Mommy dearest, that's why we sent you that figure! No need to lobby. Once we get what we deserve and get back to work, let's talk!' he wrote.

Apparently, not only fans have been clamoring for Curtis to play the role, but also Owens himself long before Curtis expressed her desire. And while no official announcement has been made, it looks like there's no reason to doubt who's been cast as Dr. Kureha!

Why She is Perfect for the Role

It's worth mentioning that Jamie Lee Curtis has long been familiar with One Piece and has expressed her love for the franchise on numerous occasions. For example, during a Comic-Con, the actress jokingly said that she wished she could be Nico Robin.

But for now, she is fully committed to playing Dr. Kureha! Considering Curtis' gamut of acting skills, from her scream queen status in horror films to her experience in fantasy and comedy, there's no doubt that her performance will absolutely nail it.
