One of the Weirdest Supernatural Details Has a Perfectly Logical Explanation
Supernatural was rarely consistent with anything, but one particular detail remained the same for 15 seasons. Got your attention?
Good. That detail is the fact that both Winchesters avoid umbrellas like the plague, the only exception being the infamous Bugs episode from season 1.
This is the only time Sam and Dean can be seen using umbrellas to shield themselves from the rain. Why is that?
This is exactly the question a fan asked the show's creator on Twitter, saying "thank you" to the person who made the boys "so much cooler and kick ass in the rain [without umbrellas]."
We couldn't agree more!
Quiz: Which Supernatural Character Are You?
Eric Kripke was quick to deliver the perfect explanation! He told the fan that Kim Manners (the late Supernatural director) worked on The X-Files, where the characters were not shy to use umbrellas, so Kripke "figured it was fine."
Then he called Manners and said, "The boys aren't scared of demons, but they're scared of rain?" Something didn't add up!
According to the father of Supernatural, that conversation was the starting point for the hard no-umbrella rule.
Considering they filmed the show in rainy Vancouver, Canada, that must have been rough – we just want to say how amazed we are at Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles ' stamina!
Kate Middleton Had a Pretty Ordinary Job Before Royalty (And Was Terrible At It)
So, this is the story of how Supernatural banned umbrellas early on.
Of course, that did not stop the series from becoming a fan favorite, running for 15 successful seasons, and spawning two spin-off shows (the-one-that-must-not-be-named and The Winchesters, which continues to carry on the legacy!).
What if the boys had kept on saving people, hunting things, the family business, but had stopped risking getting a runny nose on a rainy day?
We doubt that would have made that much of a difference – their cool is unbeatable, and no umbrellas can change that!
Still, it is nice to know that the show's creators have thought through even the little things that the most devoted fans might wonder about (and actually get answers to!).
It just proves that Supernatural deserves to be that special show that so many hold close to their hearts.
