How would a crazy gag like that last for so long?

Summary:

  • Friends is a sitcom with many completely unbelievable storylines.
  • One storyline from season 8 makes it clear that the writers wanted to show the characters at their worst.
  • Joey's ridiculous proposal is the lamest storyline ever introduced in the show.

There are a lot of things that make us love Friends, and almost as many reasons to hate it. For example, who can blame you for wanting Ross and Rachel to end up together during your first viewing of the show, and being mad as hell that Rachel got off the plane during your 10th rewatch?

As you all know, the show is about six friends living in New York, trying to maintain their lives and find their place in this world. Ross and Monica are brother and sister, and Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey are the rest of the gang.

Throughout the series, there were many storylines that the viewers were obsessed with. For example, Monica and Richard's storyline is one of the most popular in the entire show, and Kathy cheating on Chandler is the most devastating.

But while these are the examples of good writing and storylines that actually helped the characters grow in some way, the show also has some other storylines that are just lame and incredibly annoying. Like Joey proposing to Rachel.

It happened at the end of season 8 when Rachel gave birth to Emma. Before that, Ross' mom gave him the family engagement ring and implied that he should use it, or even think about using it soon.

We saw the look on Ross' face when he took the ring and we realized that he might grow to like the idea. However, shortly thereafter, due to an absolutely stupid mix-up, Joey ends up on one knee in front of Rachel, offering her the ring that fell out of Ross' pocket.

Joey didn't say the words, but no woman needs them to say yes when she sees a man on one knee with a ring. So Rachel says "I do" without thinking twice, and then Joey... just puts the ring on her finger! No explanation, no awkward retrieval of the ring: he actually just let her think they were engaged.

And Rachel, we don't know, maybe it was the pregnancy brain still working, but what was she thinking when she said yes? And we get that she was really considering marrying Joey because she later told the girls that they were engaged.

All this stuff took them a whole day to resolve, instead of the 30 seconds it should have taken. Which just goes to show that the show's main characters aren't the brightest bulbs in the room...
