Olivia Colman Gets Candid on Her Deleted Scene in Barbie
It's the loss of the movie, not the actress.
Summary:
- In the summer of 2023, Barbie- mania took over the world thanks to Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie.
- Although it ended up being great, all the what-ifs that keep coming up about the production have fans worried about what they lost.
- One of the stars that was completely cut is Olivia Colman. While fans see it as a big loss, the actress has a different take.
It's not often that a movie release becomes the main event of the year. In a post-Covid reality where theaters are struggling to make enough money to stay open, 2023 saw one of the most exciting cinematic phenomena of all: Barbie.
Premiering on the same day in the summer of 2023, Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan 's Oppenheimer went head-to-head throughout the year and into awards season. There, Nolan's Oppenheimer swept the majority of nominations.
As much as cinephiles around the world appreciate both films, many wonder if the results could have been different if Greta Gerwig had decided to stick with the original choices without any changes or cuts. It might have been a different movie.
Olivia Colman Barbie Deleted Scene
Unfortunately, no matter how much the screenwriter and director want to tell in the movie, and no matter how many resources are available to make even the craziest wishes come true on screen, it is impossible to fit everything in just a couple of hours. Some scenes, as fun as they are, don't add anything to the plot, so they end up being cut.
In the case of 2023's Barbie, the deleted scene included Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, which caused some backlash among fans.
Speaking to IndieWire, the actress has finally broken her silence about the unfortunate incident that saw her completely cut out of Greta Gerwig's film. As much as we all love a little drama, there was none in this case, as no blood was shed between any of the parties involved.
“It made perfect sense, because it didn’t add to the story, it was just fun. Maybe they were running over, I don’t know. But it was kind of perfect for me, because I got paid for the job, and then no one could say I was sh#t in it,” she said.
If anyone should be upset that the iconic scene between Olivia Colman and Helen Mirren was cut, it's the audience. Who knows, maybe one day we'll get to see the extended director's cut of Barbie, and the cameo will be there, but for now, all we can do is imagine how chaotic and fun it could have been.
If you enjoyed the Barbie madness in theaters and are already missing the pink, polished, and vibrant world that Greta Gerwig and the production team brought to the screen, you can stream the movie on Max.
