Old Scooby Doo Movie by James Gunn Was Supposed to Be Everything Velma Strived to Become
James Gunn’s live-action Scooby-Doo is a fun movie as it is… But you have no idea just how steamy and racy it used to be before all the cuts and script changes!
Scooby Doo is a classic American franchise that is largely beloved by both kids and parents. There are comics, cartoons, books, and live-action movies about the adventures of the talkative dog and his human friends…
But Scooby Doo has not always been as child-friendly as we’re used to. In fact, it was quite the opposite!
It’s the 21st birthday of James Gunn ’s 2002 Scooby Doo movie, and since the movie is now even allowed to grab a beer at a pub, we think it’s about time the world learned about what this film was supposed to be.
If a bunch of furious parents didn’t insist on multiple cuts and changes, it would’ve been PG-13… See for yourself.
Sex talk
In the initial script of Gunn’s Scooby-Doo, there were quite a few dialogues about the most intimate moments. For instance, Daphne stated that she’d left Fred because he’d slept with every female fan he’d come across…
And she’d later admit she didn’t regret their break-up because she’d been only pretending to enjoy sex with him.
Half-nude scenes
The original footage reveals that Velma really loved to get her clothes off. There was a scene with Velma in her swimsuit dancing in the girl’s changing room — and another one with a drunk (yeap!) Velma getting undressed in a bar and dancing on the table in her bra… Daphne’s swimsuit was not half as revealing as Velma’s, though.
LGBT implications
Velma was supposed to be a lesbian. Initially, there were several scenes and dialogues in the movie that implied that Velma had a crush on Daphne, and the girls even shared a kiss at least once.
Apparently, Fred was also suggested to be gay without realizing it — and Daphne even called him that, but for a different reason.
Stoner hunger
Originally, the script had a whole bunch of marijuana jokes and references. It was specifically hinted that Shaggy was a massive stoner, and that was the true reason for his constant hunger.
Add to that the fact that he was likely smoking together with none other than Scooby-Doo himself, and you can see why those parents raged.
In the end, most of the topics that were deemed controversial back in 2002 were dropped completely or trimmed down to have no real presence in the movie…
But admittedly, all these things would’ve made the Scooby-Doo live-action adaptation ten times better — and around a thousand times better than the recent Velma series.
Well, being better than 2023’s Velma is by now means a remarkable feat, but you get the point.
