OG Ariel Sides With The Little Mermaid Despite Backlash
It's easier to feel confident when you know that the master has your back.
The Little Mermaid live-action movie is probably one of those projects that caused a lot of negativity even at the stage of being just announced.
The thing is, everyone seems to be really tired of Disney turning the beloved old cartoons into live-action one after another.
The controversy just kept growing as the newest details were revealed by the creators. First, there was a lot of criticism when they announced who would be playing Ariel. Not everyone was happy with the choice of Halle Bailey.
Then there were a lot of negative comments on the depiction of the rest of the underwater world. The computer portrayal of Flounder and Sebastian just made the internet explode with comments like "stop it."
A lot of different changes were made in the movie if you compare it to the original. And most of the fans seem to be upset about it. But it looks like the movie has the total support of the first Ariel there ever was.
Jodi Benson is the one who voiced Ariel in the original cartoon, and she is sure that all these changes are made for good.
"Things change. We've got to roll with that. I think that Rob and John have done a beautiful job of doing that and still paying tribute and honor to our original film, but you've got to have growth," she said in the interview with Entertainment Weekly.
She pointed out that it is really important to offer something relevant to the audience. And what might have worked in 1986 would not necessarily work today, so many years later.
Even the classic story has to be changed to bring some fresh air to the storytelling and to be up to date.
The 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid will hit big screens on May 26.
