Since the early 2020s, the vampire topic has been experiencing a renaissance on screen: AMC released a new adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, and Sony made the Morbius comic book into a movie. And don't even get us started on that Twilight renaissance!
The Vampire Diaries is already a classic, but it's been replaced by new fanged heroes who deserve your attention.
1. True Blood
True Blood, like The Vampire Diaries, is based on a series of novels. At the center of the story is a seemingly ordinary waitress. Sookie has a rare gift of telepathy, which does little to help her in life, and mostly brings trouble.
True Blood focuses on the romantic side of the relationship between the main characters and puts Sookie in front of a difficult choice between two men who love her – Bill and the leader of the vampire clan, Eric.
2. A Discovery of Witches
Deborah Harkness' fantasy trilogy All Souls tells the story of a young woman named Diana, a historian and birthright witch, who stumbles upon a rare manuscript that is being hunted by several influential magical clans at once.
Discovery of the Witches blends elements of medieval fantasy, sci-fi, and even gothic horror, and the main draw of the series is the amazing chemistry between the main character and a vampire, who quickly become romantically attracted to each other.
3. Dracula
The British TV series Dracula from Sherlock and Doctor Who writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss is a reimagining of Bram Stoker's famous story.
With so many adaptations of Stoker's work, Moffat and Gatiss' Dracula doesn't aim to follow the original. In addition, the show's writers place a brave nun at the center of the story, confronting Count Dracula and giving the story a relevant feminist context.
4. Interview with the Vampire
The new adaptation of Interview with the Vampire is only the second attempt by Hollywood to bring Anne Rice's bestseller to the screen.
The show is set at the end of the 19th century. The main character Louis is trying to build his own business in a country ruled by privileged white Americans. Louis' life suddenly changes when he meets Lestat, a French nobleman and an extremely tyrannical vampire.
5. What We Do in the Shadows
Based on the movie of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the comedy series follows four vampires who share an apartment in New York City.
Like the movie, the show is a postmodern creation that satirizes the classic image of vampires from the cinema of the past. In Clement's show, all the characters are endowed with a remarkable degree of self-reflection, which paradoxically makes them human and, to some extent, even profound creatures.
