But one thing still remains the same.

For many years, True Detective remained a blueprint for all crime dramas to come. Dark and brooding, the show cast some of the most prominent actors to play out various stories of murders, disappearances, and ancient mysteries that no one had been able to solve before. For an entire decade, no show could even come close.

That was, until the show was ruined for so many with its fourth chapter, Night Country. No matter what your reasons are for loving or hating it, you better brace yourself for a major change in season 5 that would make the show unrecognizable.

Is True Detective Renewed for Season 5?

Even though many people didn't like the way the Night Country season of True Detective turned out, critics weren't as judgmental, giving it higher scores than expected. This success led to the show being renewed for another season, but it was also a source of great disappointment. The showrunner of season 4 stayed the same.

But don't rush to cancel your Max subscription and give up on the show you've loved for 10 years. According to showrunner Issa López, the new season will feel very different from her first, so maybe the Night Country haters will find some solace in that.

“[True Detective season 5 is] in the writing. And it’s a blast. It’s completely different. There’s different characters, different setting, different story — and I’m enjoying it like crazy,” López told Variety.

Noting that this season will be 'a completely different adventure,' the writer refused to give many more details. Not only is the main mystery likely to be kept under wraps to keep the intrigue going, but the characters who will lead the show next are also being kept under wraps for now. Viewers, hungry for any information, are still left with their guesses.

While the majority of fans wouldn't care too much if the show is led by two women, there is one thing about Night Country that they found completely unforgivable, and that's the way the season ended. The vague finale wasn't the one viewers had been waiting for, and watching it left a bad taste in many people's mouths.

Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that Issa López won't repeat her biggest Night Country mistake. So the only thing fans of the show can do is wait and see when the premiere rolls around.
