Nicolas Cage's Upcoming Horror Movie Has Monsters Inspired by the Goofiest Disney Character
We’ve never expected to put these words in this order, but Nicolas Cage clashes with Disney’s Goofy-inspired monsters in his new Certified Fresh horror movie.
Summary:
- Nicolas Cage’s latest movie is a Benjamin Brewer-directed horror flick Arcadian.
- According to Arcadian’s director, Disney ’s Goofy was a huge inspiration for his monsters.
- Arcadian boasts a Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes and mostly positive reviews.
Throughout his career, Nicolas Cage has embodied countless characters in movies of various genres, but this year, he returns to horror. The actor’s latest flick, Benjamin Brewer-directed Arcadian, received a relatively rare for the genre Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s not the thing that makes it stand out the most.
The Disney-inspired monstrosities do, as bizarre as it sounds.
Arcadian’s Monsters Are Goofy’s Cousins
Let’s admit it, no one has ever expected to see horror monsters directly inspired by one of Disney’s most wholesome and, well, goofy characters — and yet, here we are. When speaking to IGN, director Benjamin Brewer revealed the source of his inspiration and explained how Goofy can be terrifying and what drove him to do it.
“I had this idea of big nocturnal eyes and massive spaced-out teeth. Teeth way too big for the creature’s mouth. Goofy, the Disney character, was a big inspiration, <...> because in [A Goofy Movie], that dream sequence <...> is terrifying. It’s too much personality. We gave our creatures too much personality because it would be freaky for people,” Brewer explained.
Indeed, inspiration can come from the weirdest places — but as ridiculous as the director’s idea may sound at first, it’s hard to argue with his approach’s efficiency.
Arcadian Goofed Its Way to Certified Fresh
On Rotten Tomatoes, the new horror movie fared really well: critics gave it an amazing 84% Tomatometer Score, and 62% of viewers supported them with the Audience Score. On IMDb, Arcadian’s score mirrored its RT one with 6.2/10. Apart from Nicolas Cage’s sheer star power, this should largely be attributed to Ben Brewer’s unique approach to his monsters and the terror they induce on viewers.
In Arcadian, Cage’s character and his twin sons are trying to survive in a unique post-apocalypse setting where at night, Goofy-inspired monstrosities come out of hiding to destroy everything in their path. It’s easier said than done when you have two teenage boys to care about, and one night, they have to step out into the dark…
