It fell victim to fan prejudice.

The history of horrors knows a number of such classic films that established the whole franchises that manage to stay afloat for decades. These include The Omen, Friday the 13th, The Evil Dead and other movie series that are familiar to every cinema lover.

However, such franchises can often bring the installments that only defame the honor of the original movies. The same has seemingly happened with one of the darkest horror series, as its latest movie was received quite poorly by critics and by the audience, and it’s proved by its shameful 22% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Its plot revolves around Victor, a widowed man, who has to raise his daughter Angela on his own. One day, the girl and her best friend mysteriously disappear into the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them.

Victor starts suspecting the girls were possessed by a demon and desperately tries to prevent a chain of terrifying events waiting for them. He finds the only way out of it in the evidence of the only person who has witnessed something like this before, Chris MacNeil.

This name-dropping is not accidental, as the genre veterans can recognize the name of the protagonist of the iconic horror, 1973’s The Exorcist. Yes, we’re talking about its direct sequel and the sixth installment in this whole movie franchise.

Titled The Exorcist: Believer, it’s hated by fans and gets dubbed the mere parody of the original film.

“Every time you think this movie is going to become interesting, it turns into the most generic horror sludge imaginable,” says Redditor @sandiskplayer34.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t interfere with the movie’s success, as now it’s holding the third place on HBO’s global chart. More than that, during its release in 2023 it earned $137 million against a budget of $30 million and then got a sequel that is now in development.

“I think everyone bashing the film expected it to be exactly like the original. I thought it was an extremely well done movie,” admits @Relative-Sun2650.

Indeed, it’s nearly impossible to top the iconic 1973 movie, but, of course, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give the new franchise’s movie a try.

Check out The Exorcist: Believer, as it’s available for streaming on Netflix and Prime.
