Tomas Shelby may be making an appearance on the big screen.

Summary

  • Peaky Blinders ended in 2022, and ever since, fans have been hoping to see their favorite actor, Cillian Murphy, return to the role of Tomas Shelby.
  • Back in 2021, showrunner Steven Knight announced that the series would end with a feature-length movie, with filming set to begin in 2023.
  • Murphy has indicated that he is open to the idea of starring in the upcoming Peaky Blinders feature film.

When the upcoming release of Oppenheimer was announced, few people were unfamiliar with the star of the upcoming blockbuster, Cillian Murphy, and so the excitement surrounding the film owes a debt of gratitude not only to the name of J. Robert Oppenheimer, but of course to Murphy himself, who has performed it with all his devotion.

After all, the Irish actor is now one of the biggest talents of the British and American film industry, famous not only for his distinctive eye color, but also for his participation in projects of Christopher Nollan, as well as for one of the best roles in the history of crime dramas (and period pieces as well), the cold and calculating Thomas Shelby in the cult series Peaky Blinders.

Since the series ended after nine years on the air and six seasons, Peaky Blinders has not stopped being discussed on social platforms because its creator, the legendary Steven Knight, intends to produce a feature film that will finally complete the story of the Shelby family and their gang.

Despite the fact that production has already begun, details are still scarce, and therefore many have an important and impatient question: will Cillian Murphy return to his magnetic role one last time? The actor himself has the answer to this question, which has caused absolute frenzy among the fans.

Cillian Murphy Delights Fans with Latest Update

Cillian has been very evasive in his answers regarding his involvement in the upcoming project, but a recent interview with Variety, published on December 5th, has some very intriguing details that suggest Murphy is not at all opposed to starring in the film.

As part of the interview, the actor chatted with Margot Robbie, who brought with him more than a little hype to pop culture this summer with the emergence of the Barbenheimer phenomenon. As it turns out, Robbie is also a big fan of Murphy and his role in Peaky Blinders, so she couldn't resist asking her idol about the movie.

When asked by Robbie if there will be a spin-off movie, Murphy said he was 'open to the idea. I've always thought that if there's more story to tell.' However, he noted that the series finale was 'perfect' and he likes its 'ambiguity.' However, he also noted that 'it's sometimes hard to move into the film format.'

In his opinion, the script should justify Tommy's return and allow for even more character exploration and development. Although in this case it all depends on the storytelling talents of Steven Knight, it's unlikely that Murphy could refuse when his literal fan, Robbie, made no secret of her excitement and personally asked him to return to the project!

A Little Bit on the Upcoming Peaky Blinders Movie

Steven Knight stated his intention to continue the story of the series as a feature film as early as 2021, as a COVID-related hiatus in 2020 forced the cancellation of season seven. Later, during the 2022 National Television Awards, Knight indicated that production would begin as early as spring 2023, and filming is well underway, unaffected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Season 6 ended during the heyday of the Nazi Party in Germany and the rise of fascist sentiment in Britain, so the upcoming film will likely touch on the World War II era. One of the few survivors in the series finale was Thomas Shelby himself, but he still has to deal with the survivors who tried to kill him. All of this points to Murphy's full involvement in the upcoming film, but is that the case?
