New Spanish True Crime Drama Tops Netflix Global Chart, but Leaves Fans Confused

It's no news that every now and then a certain genre or subgenre becomes more popular than all the others. For a long time, the TV world followed the Westerns, but now it seems that true crime dramas are on the rise.

With the recent success of Netflix 's drama Baby Reindeer, which follows Richard Gadd's real-life story of being stalked by a woman, several other true crime dramas have recently premiered on the platform.

But only one of them ended up right next to Baby Reindeer on Netflix's Global Top Chart, and that's the new investigative thriller called The Asunta Case. The miniseries unravels one of the most shocking true crimes committed in Spain.

What Is The Asunta Case About?

Created by Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira and Jon de la Cuesta, the series revolves around a family that includes a wealthy couple from Spain, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra, and their adopted daughter Asunta Fong Yang from China.

She became part of the family in 2001, but in 2013 her foster parents reported her missing. And while the police initially thought she had been kidnapped, after a thorough investigation they arrested the adoptive parents and laid the blame on them, sending shockwaves throughout the country.

The Asunta Case Has One Major Problem

However, viewers were left rather confused after watching the devastating series. The thing is, there was no real evidence, no clues, and even no flashbacks shown in the series that would at least hint at the fact that the parents indeed committed the crime.

“I was disappointed in the outcome of the show. They started the show by suggesting that the parents were being railroaded, and then six episodes later, with viewers not knowing any more than they did at the beginning, the parents indeed were railroaded. The end. Not much of a plot,” Redditor sideyard19 said.

Well, while many fans see this as a negative thing, some others say that this is exactly what happened in real life. There was no plot, and the motive was never found.

So the Netflix guys probably just didn't want to create another wheel, but wanted to put the original, shocking and confusing story in front of the viewers.
