The follow-up to He-Man and Skeletor's rivalry continues to garner critical acclaim.

Summary

  • After the success of She-Ra, fans of the Masters of the Universe franchise were pleasantly surprised in 2021 with a new He-Man story created by Kevin Smith.
  • Now a new season, Revolution, has been released on Netflix.
  • Just a few days after its release, the series has already received a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the 21st century, the demand for Mattel's Masters of the Universe has only grown (not only because of the 'Hayeayea' memes), as in 2018, Netflix has released an incredibly successful reboot centered around the adventures of She-Ra. In 2021, however, it was all about He-Man, as Netflix, led by Kevin Smith, released a sequel to He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, subtitled Revelation. And now, three years later, a sequel called Revolution has finally arrived on Netflix.

It's only been four days since the second season debuted, and casual viewers, longtime He-Man and Skeletor fans and newcomers alike, have been left in awe of the new animated series. Moreover, after She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Masters of the Universe: Revolution has wowed critics, leaving it with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Let's break down what the show is all about and why it was so well received.

A New Chapter in the Adventures of He-Man

The new Masters of the Universe is a sequel to the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, continuing the story of the mid-80s sci-fi fantasy animated series. However, like She-Ra, the new show can also be considered a standalone reboot, which is quite friendly to viewers unprepared for the lore of the old cartoon.

A big feature of the first part of the first season was that the action took place through the lens of Teela, the mentor, ally and love interest of Prince Adam of Eternia, aka He-Man, deepening the lore and emotional investment in what was happening as the protagonist of the entire franchise was presumed dead at the hands of Skeletor. By the second half of the season, however, He-Man was back as the leader of the brave defenders of Eternia and beyond.

But back to the new season, which debuted on Netflix on January 25th. Revolution brings more of an old-school techno-fantasy aesthetic to the story, and of course Skeletor is not completely defeated, returning to Eternia under the leadership of his master, Hordak, to take revenge on He-Man once again. The new five episodes will once again provide not a little love, friendship, confrontation even between allies, and of course the climax in the form of the battle for Castle Grayskull.

Critically and Audience Acclaimed Series

Kevin Smith is definitely a big fan of the franchise, and the love he put into his own take on Masters of the Universe is quite palpable to viewers loyal to the setting. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score was 84% — perhaps not the highest of any animated series, but certainly a solid one. Looking at the reviews, the negative ones are mostly based on the fact that He-Man was sidelined last season.

However, Smith has taken this shortcoming into account, as Prince Adam's presence has only increased in Revolution, as well as dynamic action scenes full of excellent lore explanations that make the viewer feel like a child again.

But let's get back to the main point — the reviews. After all, their score on the same Rotten Tomatoes was a perfect 100%! There are only nine critics' reviews on the list so far, so the statistics may change in the coming weeks. However, every one of these nine critics has come out in favor of the new season, praising everything from the animation style to the mind-blowing plot twists.

All in all, Masters of the Universe: Revolution is a great sequel to a modern reimagining of a once-iconic franchise that will continue to delight fans old and new.
