The franchise’s major figure isn’t returning to the shows, but that's actually good news for another character.

The NCIS universe is heading for quite big changes this year. The franchise keeps preparing its triumphant return with the original show’s season 22 and two more spinoffs that will finally dive deeper into the backstories of some of the beloved characters instead of just sticking to locations as previous installments have done.

Throughout its long history of more than twenty years on TV, NCIS has always had its lead characters come and go for a myriad of reasons, and one of them has a perfect chance to come back to the storyline now that the initial obstacle is surely gone.

Ever since season 1 and until season 15, NCIS has constantly featured Chief Forensic Scientist Abby Sciuto, portrayed by Pauley Perrette. The character quickly garnered fans’ love after her first on-screen appearances, but more than a decade later shattered everyone’s hearts announcing that she was about to resign from NCIS and head to London to pursue some other goals.

Abby’s departure from the show in fact had a very specific reason that concerns Pauley Perrette’s complicated relationship with her then co-star Mark Harmon, who portrayed Leroy Jethro Gibbs on the show until his definite departure from NCIS after season 19.

Ironically, Perrette and Harmon’s Abby and Gibbs have always been amicable towards each other bringing to the show one of the best and most stable relationships among all the lead characters. Things were much more complicated for the actors in real life, as the actress once claimed she was terrified by Harmon’s behavior after an incident involving the actor’s dog.

However, CBS executives have recently stated that there is no more bad blood between Perrette and Harmon, also making it clear that the actress would be welcome back on set should she express her desire to return to the show.

Now that Mark Harmon is no longer a part of NCIS’ present-day shows (meaning he’ll still be back in NCIS: Origins which will be set in a very different timeline), Pauley Perrette has indeed no trouble in making her way back to the flagship show, especially since her character has been surely loved and missed all this time.

The franchise’s upcoming spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva in this case comes as a perfect fit for Abby’s return, as the series will follow Tony and Ziva’s adventures across Europe, and London may easily become one of their main destinations.
