New Fantastic Four Director Just Made the Same Mistake as Everyone Before Him
If cliches were a competition, Fantastic Four would’ve been its undisputable champion — and the director of the franchise’s (yet another) reboot just proved it.
Marvel has been at the top of the movie industry for the past decade and some more, and during this time, the studio has had quite a few ups and downs. While some franchises were undeniably successful, like Avengers, others had a terribly hard time — and, without a doubt, the notorious Fantastic Four movies belong to the latter category.
Each time the Fantastic Four franchise was rebooted, we, as in “we, the audience,” were promised that this time, everything would be different!
Indescribable wonders and changes were bound to happen, but things didn’t ever go further than words — and time after time, new Fantastic Four movies kept falling flat.
Now, the next — fifth — live-action version of this tortured franchise is under the wing of WandaVision’s creator Matt Shakman. Sounds promising, doesn’t it? But while we’re still on the topic of promises, we have to point out that the franchise is, too. The first thing Shakman said? “Everything’s different this time,” of course!
“It’s different in so many ways. <...> We are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. <...> I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you’ve seen before,” the director told Collider.
Wow, sounds exactly like the same old story! Remember it?
To be honest, though, Shakman didn’t just repeat the Fantastic Four cliche; he also indulged in the overall MCU ’s sin of promising an experience “unlike anything you’ve seen before.” When was the last Marvel project that didn’t use this catchphrase as its campaign promise? We hope you remember because we most certainly don’t.
To put it bluntly, this innocent tirade by Matt Shakman does not necessarily mean that the new Fantastic Four is going to fail, and the WandaVision creator’s track record brings us some reassurance. We’re ready to believe this time, it’s going to be different and see how the final result turns out — just like we did with the previous Fantastic Four reboots.
