Netflix's One Piece Adaptation Budget Beats Even That of Game of Thrones
Thought no one could beat the Game of Thrones budget record? The One Piece adaptation is here to prove otherwise.
According to the Daily Dose of Anime report, the live-action adaptation of One Piece had a budget of $18 million per episode. It is the most expensive series ever released by Netflix and one of the highest grossing series ever. In total, Netflix spent about $150 million on the filming.
For comparison, one of the records for the highest budget per episode belongs to Game of Thrones – the episodes of the last season cost $15 million. The budgets of the episodes of The Mandalorian almost reached the same amount.
One Piece was produced by Netflix, Tomorrow Studios and Shueisha, the manga's publisher. The adaptation of the manga of the same name follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the ocean in search of a treasure that will grant Captain Monkey D. Luffy the title of Pirate King.
Inaki Godoy will play the role of Monkey D. Luffy, while Japanese actor Mackenyu will play Roronoa Zoro. Emily Rudd will play Nami, Jacob Gibson will play Usopp, and Taz Skylar will play Sanji.
When the news broke that Netflix would be adapting the iconic anime, many fans were skeptical. Netflix is already notorious for its flopped adaptations, including anime adaptations – most recently an adaptation of Cowboy Bebop disappointed fans, and in the case of One Piece, the stakes are even higher.
One Piece is one of the most legendary anime of all time. It was a very bold move for Netflix to go for the live-action adaptation. And even though Netflix wants to hit the jackpot, the chances of getting a huge amount of devastating reviews are only going to increase.
In addition, the original anime already has more than 1000 episodes, and the main question is which storylines the creators of the adaptation will decide to keep and which ones will be discarded.
While a huge budget does not necessarily guarantee good quality, it does give hope that One Piece will not repeat the fate of Cowboy Bebop and become a worthy successor to the cult original anime.
