Netflix's New Med Procedural by LOST Creator Set to 'Eat' Grey's Anatomy

Jumping into the ever-growing mix of medical series, and set to be a hit, is Netflix 's latest original.

In the second month of this year, the streaming giant announced its first procedural drama. Despite its recent acquisition of shows like Grey's Anatomy, NCIS, Suits and Lincoln Lawyer, Netflix does not seem to be slowing down. But even more exciting than a new original series are the big names behind the production.

The show in question, titled Pulse, began production in March of this year, with the plot revolving around Miami's busiest Level 1 Trauma Center. Of course, we can expect an addictive combination of medical emergencies and personal dilemmas as the series follows the lives of its doctors and surgeons both inside and outside of the hospital.

So far, we know that the premise will begin with Justina Machado, the first confirmed series regular, as the central character. Machado, who previously starred in The Horror of Dolores Roach and Six Feet Under, will play Natalie Cruz in Pulse, described as 'a brilliant and politically-savvy doctor, who oversees both administration and medicine in her role as the Chair of Surgery and Emergency Medicine.'

The big names behind the scenes

What sets Pulse apart from the rest, and on an almost guaranteed path to the Netflix top 10, are the people behind the scenes, and these individuals are certainly no strangers to producing fan favorites.

The series is the brainchild of Zoe Robyn and marks Robyn's first credit as creator, executive producer and showrunner. Robyn made a name for herself with CBS' The Equalizer and Hawaii Five-0.

She will work alongside Lost's Carlton Cuse, who has also been named showrunner and executive producer. In addition to the iconic Lost, Cuse wrote and directed the first two seasons of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. His long list of credits also includes San Andreas, Bates Motel and Locke and Key.

Finally, on board to direct and executive produce the first two episodes is Kate Dennis, who worked on The Handmaid's Tale and another popular medical drama, New Amsterdam.

With their years of experience and multiple hit shows and movies between them, the crew behind Pulse seems like a dream team to rival Shonda Rhimes' creation.

Is it time for Grey's to scrub out?

Producing groundbreaking originals seems to have become the norm for Netflix, with shows like Stranger Things and Wednesday racking up record viewership numbers. The likelihood of Pulse adding to their list of big hits seems guaranteed, especially with the hole left by Grey's Anatomy.

Shonda Rhimes' Grey's released its 20th season in March this year, but after all these years and the loss of so many fan-favorite characters, including leading lady Meredith Grey, medical drama fans may be ready to begin their journey with a new procedural drama.

There's no doubt that Grey's Anatomy will live on and maintain its legacy as one of the greatest medical dramas of all time, but it may be time for a new show to take over the OR.

Will it be better? More modern? More exciting? Who will the rest of the cast be?
