Netflix's Most-Watched Show in March is Action Gem Streamed 1.2 Million Minutes
The British action comedy was the most popular series streamed in March.
Summary
- March proved to be a fruitful month for Netflix, as many new projects were released, and those that came out recently had impressive ratings.
- However, according to Nielsen's streaming charts, the most popular series of the month was one that garnered 1.2 million minutes in its first week of release.
- It's a star-studded British action comedy.
In the first half of 2024, Netflix has been incredibly prolific: it seems that no other streaming service has released as many movies and TV series, both original and licensed, in the last four months that can boast a big budget, a high level of production, and strong, if not always unambiguously enthusiastic, reviews. The Griselda biopic, the long-awaited fantasy epic Avatar: The Last Airbender, and of course the acclaimed sci-fi 3 Body Problem - these are just the first examples that come to mind, but they made a lot of buzz and became some of the most watched series on the platform.
March 2024 was particularly interesting, as it seems to have been the month with the highest concentration of new high-octane projects: France's Furies, Italy's controversial Supersex, Germany's The Signal, South Korea's Queen of Tears, the final season of Sweden's Young Royals and, of course, the aforementioned American 3 Body Problem. Moreover, the ratings provided by Netflix itself showed that all these new releases somehow found their way into the global and regional Top 10s of most watched shows.
Except that sometimes a much more representative picture is provided not by the services themselves, but by Nielsen's streaming charts, which interact with a live households. And in that context, the most-watched show both on Netflix and on streaming services in general, according to Nielsen data, was the British series The Gentlemen.
What the Nielsen Data Tells Us
Guy Ritchie 's new project has indeed generated no small amount of hype, and the week of its release on March 7, the series starring Theo James made its way into the top 10 most-watched English-language shows on Netflix worldwide. The following week, March 11-17 and March 18-24, it continued to hold the top spot, but after one more week it dropped to third place behind 3 Body Problem and, to everyone's surprise, the biblical docudrama Testament: The Story of Moses. However, Nielsen points out that The Gentlemen had the loudest start among scripted shows on U.S. streaming TV in general.
In first place from March 4-10 was the long-awaited Season 6 reunion of the reality show Love Is Blind, which amassed an impressive 1.495 million minutes. It was followed by Netflix's original feature film Damsel, starring Millie Bobby Brown, with 1.209 million minutes.
And so, The Gentlemen, released on March 7, has landed behind those two with an impressive 1.205 million views, one of the highest profile launches of any series on streaming services. Notably, Avatar: The Last Airbender was only #6 with 905 thousand minutes watched. However, the series has been out for three weeks.
What Is the Show About?
Well, it's unlikely that any of our readers haven't heard of the new TV series The Gentlemen, as it's been talked about in every corner of the media and social media. However, we still need to talk a little bit about this hit series. Not everyone believed in it, and the critical reviews before the official release were not exactly positive, but the name of the king of crime action and British humor, Guy Ritchie, has done his job well.
In the plot, Eddie Halstead (Theo James) inherits an impressive estate, only to discover that the property is tied to the activities of Matthew McConaughey's Mickey Pearson and his pot empire. In addition to James, the series also stars Kaya Scodelario, Giancarlo Esposito and Vinnie Jones. Sadly, the series did not feature cameos from the original film, but the cast proved no less talented and provided viewers with an enjoyable experience.
