Fans complain that despite being a somewhat decent sequel to the TV series, the story of The Fallen Sun could have been much better.

Luther: The Fallen Sun, a crime thriller film that serves as a sequel to the 2010-2019 British television series Luther, was recently released on Netflix and immediately sparked complaints from fans.

The film revolves around John Luther, portrayed by Idris Elba, a Detective Chief Inspector for the Metropolitan Police Service, as he pursues serial killer David Robey, played by Andy Serkis.

However, fans have found several glaring plot holes that have significantly dampened their reactions to the movie. Spoilers for Luther: The Fallen Sun ahead.

At the end of Luther series 5 (2019), the fan-favorite inspector was arrested after a failed attempt to save his ex-lover/nemesis Alice Morgan, so the film begins with him incarcerated.

It seems that Luther was put behind bars because he is suspected of the murders of Alice, DS Halliday, Benny Silver and Mr. Palmer, although the exact reason isn't revealed.

In order to stop David Robey's killing spree, our protagonist eventually breaks out of prison, only to be found and arrested again in the movie's finale.

After that, however, DCI Martin Schenk tells him that he won't be returned to the prison, and Tim Cranfield tells Luther that "the chief" wants to talk to him.

Viewers point out that the whole prison plot makes absolutely no sense, and that his release contradicts all existing laws.

They also find it strange that Luther is walking the streets of London freely, without any kind of disguise, despite being a wanted criminal.

And there is more. As Reddit user andrew_a7 pointed out:

"Disappointing watch as a fan of the series. A lot of plot holes and 'incredible' stuff happening. The whole room full of kerosene and just lights up, doesn't explode and also doesn't touch the women.

Luther in genpop in prison. David overpowers and fights Luther (that fought an entire prison) although much smaller and older. Phone working underwater. Also, did they just fly from Norway to London by helicopter?"

Still, some viewers ended up liking the movie despite all the obvious plot holes. Luther: The Fallen Sun currently has an audience score of 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and a critics score of 68%.

So it is up to the fans to make up their own minds about the latest addition to the Luther franchise.
