Netflix's January 2024 Lineup Just Added 6 Cult Family Classics

Maybe more than any other genre, there seems to be a never-ending stream of new family movies released every month. But even with all the options, there are a handful of tried-and-true family classics that are always the perfect pick.

Whether it's introducing the kids to the movies you loved growing up or rewatching an old favorite for nostalgia's sake, here are six of the best cult family classics coming to Netflix this January.

Annie (1982)

There have been countless adaptations and sequels of Annie over the years, but for most, there's only one version that sits leagues above the others. The 1982 Annie movie was the first to incorporate the popular tunes from the original musical, making songs like "Tomorrow" and "It's The Hard Knock Life" synonymous with the story. Although other updated versions have been released since, nothing quite hits home like the original, with its feel-good vibes and tons of heart, it's the quintessential family movie in every sense of the term.

Beethoven (1992)

Bruce Almighty (2003)

One of Jim Carrey 's most recognizable movies, this fantasy comedy stars the renowned actor as a washed-up news anchor who manages to become God himself after complaining to the Almighty that he could do a better job. Featuring some fantastic supporting performances from Jennifer Aniston and Morgan Freeman, Bruce Almighty offers plenty of laughs, a hilarious premise, and a surprisingly poignant message for such a lighthearted comedy. This is the perfect movie to sit down to when you want a laugh, but also want a movie with a little more depth.

How to Train Your Dragon ( 2010)

Probably DreamWorks' best animated film, the beauty of this family classic makes it a movie that never gets boring, no matter how many times you watch it. Wonderfully written, elegantly designed and superbly executed, this animated adventure seems to be universally loved for its heartfelt story of a young boy and his dragon. Not to mention, the whimsical nature of Toothless makes you adore the character right from the get-go.

School of Rock (2003)

For rock music lovers of all ages, this is most certainly the film for you. Its kooky story and style is only made more awesome by the eccentric but likeable charm of Jack Black at his very best. Even for newbies to the genre of rock, there’s an enchanting quality about this kid-friendly (but not childish) movie that you can’t help but want to be sucked into. School of Rock has maintained its status as one of the best music movies of the last 20 years.

The Flintstones (1994)

The idea of an animated cartoon made into a live-action movie seems a little ridiculous at first. Yet this 90s imaganing of the American cartoon favorite, The Flintstones, has found its own cult following over the years. Its impressive cast including John Goodman, Rick Moranis, Elizabeth Perkins, Rosie O'Donnell, Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry, and even Elizabeth Taylor, show it’s certainly no spoof. Although it may now seem a little dated, its vibrant style, original comedy, and natural effects show it still holds up today. What’s not to love about this quirky but loveable family gem?
