Netflix is ready to wow you with exciting new shows.

Summary

  • Over the past nearly 11 months, Netflix has managed to cancel more than a few exciting shows.
  • But the streaming service continues to introduce audiences to new releases.
  • Three of them have been incredibly well received by critics and viewers.

2023 kicked off with some very exciting announcements, but the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes hit suddenly, putting the industry on halt until the writers won a new contract with the AMPTP in late September and the actors in early November. While workers in the industry were fighting for the right cause, improving working conditions, the side effects were felt almost immediately: Studios, suffering huge financial losses, canceled many popular IPs.

This was the case with Netflix, as the streaming service, saving money due to increased residuals, canceled 15 excellent shows this year, including the most high-profile cancellations like 1899 from the makers of the German hit Dark, the animated series Inside Job from the creators of Gravity Falls and BoJack Horseman, and the acclaimed fantasy series Shadow and Bone, based on the novels by Leigh Bardugo.

But to make up for it, the streamer has been unprecedentedly generous, renewing 31 shows and continuing to add new series to its library. Speaking of which, we've compiled a list of all the new Netflix originals you can binge on this week.

Rounding out our list is the highest-profile series from the creator of the original graphic novel, Bryan Lee O'Malley, which reimagines the love story of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers. Many critics praised the animation by Japanese studio Science Saru, the excellent soundtrack, the voice work of the all-star cast, and the fresh and original take on the story by O'Malley himself, who placed Ramona at the center of the story and reimagined Scott's troubled character. This show is currently killing it with critics, boasting a 97% score on RT and a solid 8.2 on IMDb. Audiences, however, seem to prefer Edgar Wright's 2010 adaptation, which has an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 77% for the new show.
